I know this question was directed at Viola but I wanted to say that I completely agree with you Miles.

@Zatanna Despite all of the setbacks though what's at least really fantastic and good about it is that people are so nostalgic for physical media that collecting it is now seen as "cool". Personally I think physical media is neat too. I just wish that some stuff I liked that came out when physical media was about to be no more had gotten on DVD like "101 Dalmatian Street". I LOVED that show. It deserved to be on DVD.

okay let me just correct you on one thing:
streaming services like Disney+ and Discovery+ and HBO Max and Hulu and Paramount+ and Peacock are as expensive as cable once was
this is absolutely 100% not true, streaming is still WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper than cable was and i can only assume the people who say that 'streaming is now as expensive as cable' are people who were too young to have ever actually paid for cable

like if you were subbed to peacock premium plus, paramount+ with showtime, the ad-free disney+, hulu, and max bundle, netflix premium, and apple tv+, you'd be paying around $92/mo (maybe slightly more with taxes) for all that streaming

so $92/mo for having access to eight streaming services, but let's compare that with cable - i'm gonna go with xfinity and use the address of my summer home:
xfinity has four plans available at my summer home address:
- choice TV for $58.10/mo
- sports & news TV for $70/mo
- popular TV for $95/mo
- ultimate TV for $128.40/mo

'oh, look there's two options that are cheaper than the $92 for streaming and one option that's around the same price, that proves that streaming is now just as expensive as cable'

well no, it doesn't because there is so much more to it: for starters, that $58/10/mo choice TV plan? all you get as far as channels goes is like your local channels, C-SPAN, some religious channels, and shopping channels. the sports & news TV? obviously that + sports and news channels, you need to either go for the $95/mo popular TV or the $128.40/mo ultimate TV option to actually have a decent amount of channels

and seeing as the cost for all the streaming services is $92, i am going to use the $95/mo popular TV option to further explain why streaming is absolutely not anywhere near the expense of cable TV and people really need to stop saying it is:
okay so i've decided on the $95/mo popular tv option and hey, there are additional channel packs - oh hey, i can get xfinity streamsaver, which gives me access to netflix standard w/ ads, apple tv+, and peacock premium with ads for only $15/mo, that's a pretty great deal isn't it? so let's add that.

okay, now i'm going to be paying $110/mo but still i'd say $92/mo isn't that far off from $110/mo

but now i need equipment too, you need cable boxes for cable TV, after all. okay well, i got a TV in the living room, one in both bedrooms, and one in the dining room/kitchen. so i'll need a total of four cable boxes. remember - you're just renting these from xfinity, you don't own them and, at least for xfinity's cable boxes, they cost $12/mo per box, so with four cable boxes, that's an additional $48/mo, so now i'm paying $158/mo for cable...seems we're getting a bit higher than $92/mo now

DVR is also an option, but y'know what? 20 total hours of DVR is fine enough and it's free, i usually only record a show if it's just airing late or whatever and then delete it after i'm done. so no extra cost there.

but there's also taxes too, calculating the estimated taxes for my summer home, that's about $8.39/mo so we're up to $166.39/mo

but then there's also the broadcast TV fee and the regional sports fee, those are an additional $33.10/mo and $1.90/mo respectively, the writing on Xfinity's listing makes it sound like those prices are included with the $95/mo you pay for the popular TV plan, but no - they are separate from the listed price

so, including those as well - the ACTUAL monthly cost of this $95/mo cable TV plan is...$201.39/mo

yeah $200/mo for cable vs $92/mo for eight streaming services, if you genuinely think streaming is now 'just as expensive as cable was', i can only roll my eyes.

@Princess Viola Yeah you're right LOL. It's just statements I've heard people making about it but maybe they don't know what they're talking about or they're exaggerating or something. Probably the latter, actually. Like I don't even have a streaming service now but I will sometime soon so of course I don't know anything about price. At least all the rest of the statements about the other problems with digital media were accurate (owning nothing, having to repay to re-watch, etc.). I don't know. I guess just with new forms of media and entertainment, there's always new problems. Also LOL all this pricing you're rattling off is making my head spin; it's just too much information. But I agree with all your points. I literally don't know ANYTHING about this stuff LOL. Also I can see why people are abandoning cable and going to digital. Cable is so much more expensive and limited.

ah, no.

saying 'you have to repay to rewatch stuff' isn't true either because uhhh...that is literally not how any streaming services or digital media works? if you're subscribed to a streaming service, all the movies and TV shows that are available on the streaming service are just included with your service, you don't have to pay each time you watch it.

and if you buy something digitally, like...you bought it. even if you deleted it because it was taking up space on your phone or whatever and you needed to free up some space, you can literally redownload it later at any time for free.

the only time where you'd have to pay to rewatch something digitally is if you rented it, but that's not unique to digital that's literally how renting movies works.
