yes. the people that you played as in the demo are apparently not real people, but CPU characters with random kart combinations and nicknames. So it was single player all along with AI. i assume this is because its just a demo though.

i would not have an issue to pay for the game if it actually was decent also microtransactions are a big no, specially since mario kart is such a good brand that it sells itself.
