I think it's because, assuming that you don't kill the Fawful Bug in one go, you have to redo that phase multiple times. And if you're really unlucky, you could be like kid-me who didn't realize you had to eat the bug after getting it out of Dark Bowser's body.

I just found the whole thing hilarious. It's starting to crossover into annoying when I was try to search the Bowser tag on Tumblr or Japanese Twitter, but there wasn't much going on in either at the time anyway. Maybe not now but it was trending in Japan when it first happened.
