The guy who made that model does a little webseries ("A Day In The Life of Bowser Jr." or something like that). It's less the model itself and more the artstyle. 2D art for that series looks very similar, if not exactly like that model. Man, you guys should see Bowz, if you think that's off.

For Yoshi I guess it's because he doesn't really act like a dinosaur at all whereas Diddy has some chimp moves and DK and Bowser are monstrous powerhouses. Junior would fall under this too since he's the least animalistic of the non-humans.

Crossover fighting games kinda vary. You don't get rosters as out-there as Smash, but you do get the occasional stuff like Roll from Mega Man (specifically the chibified Powered Up version) fighting Yami from Okami. I guess Marvel crossovers in general qualify, but the character choices there...
