Sonic started out as a Mario Clone (whose superiority was supposed to be in his faster moves, as early Sonic commercials poking at Mario used to suggest).
1½ Super Mario. Inbetween small Mario and Super Mario; requires two or more hits to break blocks. When damaged, becomes mini Mario.
Little Firey Mario, from a bug/cheat in the original 8 bit games. Damage turns him into a large "vulnerable" Mario (looks "super", but one hit kills him)...
Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii U-Nintendo Direct Details
Those are actually from SMW, too (along with the diagonal theme). I preferred the smaller triangle shaped mountains from the original SMB.
I also see the angry sun from SMB3 is in it.
Technically, (though no one else has ever seen it this way), you can see Luigi as starting out not only as an identical sprite with different colors, but even as a 100% identical (including color) clone in Donkey Kong Jr. If anyone remembers; TWO Marios hoist up DK Sr. and begin moving the cage...
I entered the modern Nintendo world with the Wii (after a 16 year "break" from gaming), for NSMBW. Then, I got SM Galaxy 2, my first ever 3D Mario. I also bought the original SMB1 and 2J for the Virtual Console. Now, since they came out with SM 3DL; I had to get that, since it was the 3D side...
Having finished SM3DL, I'm now waiting (tax returns) to get NSMB, which I had skipped, since I did not have the DS before. Seeing the screenshot used for that video, it looked almost like this new game was just a rerelease of that one. I figured that now, inbetween games, was a good time to...
You actually wouldn't want them to (as if they would let that would kill her for you).
I thought I would never get past that, being so terrified of the donut drops, and making short jumps through the area only to get caught by the bouncing shell.
I found that instead, if you just do laps around...
When actually playing the game, you assume at first glance he's just jumping up and bumping them with his head. The publicity drawings clearly show his fist, though. So it's just that in the game sprites, his fists aren't as prominent as his head, so it just looks like he's bumping his head...
Interesting. It seemed that this early concept of the game sounded a lot like certain levels in NSMBW, where you pick each oher up, and use blocks to reach certain places on vertical levels.
I've recently seen that the wiki suggests that the cartoon "King Koopa" was actually based on Wart! (which would answer why Wart never appeared in the cartoon. It suggests the character was basically a merger of the two!) http://www.mariowiki.com/Bowser#DIC_Cartoons
That makes sense, as the...
Are you talking about the 3D feature? I myself just keep it off. Otherwise, the graphics are just like the other 3D titles (particularly the later ones, where the polygonal structure is less evident, and the resolution is much higher).
I guess there are places where there are optical illusions...
Up to Special 4 world now, I'd say this is the greatest game in the series yet.
Just what I wanted, in terms of being a side scroller, but with a limited 3D playing field. And having more blocks and other trappings of the original game than other 3D titles. The Supermassive Galaxy was my...
Just got mine 8) Got right into World 4 in one sitting, (where it took much longer to get that far for SMG and NSMBW). Figured it must get tougher later on, else everyone would be screaming if it were that easy.
Still, nice to be able to just have fun and not be so frustrated trying to advance...
Funny, but in one of the videos, you see Bowser with his regular tail, and he's trying to swat Mario with it, just like a Tanooki tail (and hasn't he moved lke that before?) So they didn't need to give him the new tail at all.
Mario&½. Instead of Super Mario, the powerup makes him 1½ times his size, and inbetween little and super Mario. He has to hit blocks more than once to break them. Being powered down makes him Mini Mario (with all the Mini Mario features)
Also, bring back the "little fiery Mario" bug as a...
When I got to play the demo of the game at Nintendoworld, the 3D effect just made it look blurry, like you're looking through one of those grooved plastic films (the kind that can be used on books to see different things when you look at it at different angles).
It was just distracting, and I...
Since the game is coming out the 13th ( a few weeks), and Nintendoworld usually has playable demos out in the store even before the game comes out, I called to see when they would gt this game, and they akready had it! (I usually get e-mails from Nintendo when new games are at the store.. But...
This image here suggests that 2D and 3D are modes you choose, rather than the way particular levels are preformatted (That I was familiar with from SMG2).
Or is this stereoscopic effect what you can choose or not choose?
I'm seeing now something about both a "2D" and "3D" mode. The box art, (which is way cool, BTW; looks like you can reach right in and touch things) even says 3D mode is for 7 and up only.
I take it this shot is an example 2D mode
So is 2D mode a separate game? (I don't see how you could play...
Re: Super Mario 3DS
Correct. As the Mario Mania guide had said, they had evolved from the Koopa Troopas.
By making the regular Koopa Troopas stand as well, they're making them look basically like Hammer Bros. without hammers.
Re: Super Mario 3DS
Well, the first games, they didn't show four legs, it was like two legs that were one in front of the other. So I imagine, in SMW, they just figured it would be easier to have them actually walk on two's, upright. there front legs became arms like any other biped. But this...
Re: Super Mario 3DS
They basically charge at you when you get close to them. (Not even sure which game that started with). I too preferred a more steady walk from them like the original.
I also see the Koopa Troopas walk upright again. I had liked in the Galaxy games where they finally had them...
Wizzenheimer was the Magikoopa, back when there was still only one. Remember, on the cartoons, they renamed a lot of the characters (the Koopalings, too).
I would like to see one, and it can cover the entire Mario64-3DS period (Different episodes could reflect Sunshine, Galaxy, NSMB and 3DS).
Re: Super Mario 3DS
You can swat things with the tail, which is useful in many places. And the flutter jump itself is a good thing to have. (When else can Mario do that without a power?)
I too would like to see the hammer suit and Kuribo's shoe.
"Super Mario 3D" was the logical choice when I...
Re: Super Mario 3DS
I think these were the articles I saw, highlighting the connection to the original games:

Re: Super Mario 3DS
This might be what I've been wanting for 23 years now! (Ever since SMB2 came out, and I sent in a suggestion for SMB3 (which I didn't know was already produced and out in Japan) to be a 3D version of the original).
People keep wondering if it will be another Galaxy. Well...
The original (SMB) was fine. Second place was SMB3. I think simple was cool. No need for overdone gothic compositions that took over on SMW and afterward.
Wasn't NSMB and especially NSMBW (which had Yoshi) basically the same as a NSMW? while these two games were supposed to be throwbacks to the original SMB, I thought they had too many trappings of SMW, such as the world maps and many of the characters and obstacles added. The only things really...
COOL MOVIE!
(The games it shows also supports my theory on the numbering of the "SMB" series: 64 = SMB5; Sunshine = SMB6, NSMB = SMB7, Galaxy 1 = SMB8, NSMBW = SMB9, and Galaxy 2 = SMB10!)
Didn't even realize today was the anniversary, and just got finished playing Galaxy 2 for the day.
Also...
Supermassive Galaxy in SMG2 is what I'd like to see a whole game done up as (but in regular size, though). Along with water worlds like the Cosmic Cove and whatever the other one further ahead in the game is, and of course underworlds, and castles. And add all the other cool stuff added to the...
Just an intriguing new spin on the game. (Particularly taking more than one hit to break a block). Every new game has new powerups, and it would be sort of 2in1, since it would also turn into Mini Mario.
Here's another idea I just thought of.
Mario-and-a-half.
I got the idea from the old SMB, where when he powers up or down, you can actually see two or three intermittent sizes. I wished you could freeze it on one of those sizes (like doing the trick with Bowser by which you can get little Mario...
What new worlds do the star coins on the DS open up? I have the game guide (though I never got the game), and I don't see where it says that.
And I was wondering if the star coins on level 9 of the Wii game open up anything, or is just for testing your skill.
I got all of worlds 1-6, and most...
OK, here is another idea I thought for a Mario game. Since they like to include all the stuff that's been added to the series over the years (including specifically themed worlds), in new games, then how about representing each game, in 3D version, as a whole "world" in one game?
That way, you...
