It's called "writing". The movie, according to what I've heard, fails from a narrative standpoint, not necessarily a presentation one.

That makes it worse, IMO, because then you'd effectively have infinite "tries", which would only fuel the trial-and-error method even more.

i think 1-ups are far too common in many of the recent games, especially nsmb2 and sm3dl. it cheapens death, and rewards trial-and-error more than it should.
