Just curious, why is there a PM limit?

I have gotten this message 5 times now in the time I've been on the forum:

You have exceeded the limit of 20 personal messages per hour.

What is the point of having a PM limit? I like finishing up conversations instead of making my friend think I went away.

It's probably so that spambots don't send hundreds of spam PMs to people.
