The only non-abusive dictator I can recall reading about was Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus of early Rome, who voluntarily gave up his power after the crisis was over.
Wow, he's actually dead? Never thought the day would come (well not recently at least).
In a way, it was a good thing he has passed on. His plans for the future were not exactly those that we (as the world) desired. Hopefully, his son (who will likely be taking his place) will not follow the same pathway in terms of decisions.
