I usually play with items on low, and I always rush to get it when one appears, even if it's a smokeball. Of course normal attacks are my main means of doing damage (isn't it everyones's?). I vote for items.

I still use smashes and normal attacks more but i usually kill more with items so to anwser your question i use normal attacks.
