Mario Kart 7: Demo Version (ATTN: Yami)

I saw in Yami's sig that she was playing a game called Mario Kart 7: Demo Version, can you explain what this is about.

It's a Demo Cartridge, as seen in major Game Shops.
I've got mine for free from Media Markt.

Are functions like pausing or going to the Home Menu possible with the demo version?

In this version it is. At MediaMarkt the full 3DS is playable, not just the inserted game demo.
