Nintendoland Review

9-Volt must be my video game counterpart.
I know that this post is kind of unorthodox but I might as well put it here. I promise that I won't do this often and I might not do it again at all.

Nintendoland is the pack-in game for the Wii U Deluxe Set. It consist of minigames that are based on Nintendo's franchises. I will go over each minigame and say my opinions about them, but first I will go over some miscellaneous stuff.

First off, the prizes. The prizes in this game in my opinion are the laziest excuses for prizes I have ever seen. You can tell that the prizes were an afterthought from these factors. Some of the prizes are soundtracks of the minigames and others are just enemies, bosses, objects and items that are in the minigames. You can't use any of them, they all are just for show. It sometimes even gets ridiculous, an example of this is that there is a blue falcon kart that you can't ride, a house you can't go into and a door you can open but can't go through :???:. Does that make any since at all. To be honest, they just clutter up your park in my opinion. The other problem is how you have to get the prizes. You have to drop your coins into a electronic pinkinko machine and hope that it falls through an empty slot. Once you fill in each slot, you get a prize and you have to play a level with a different layout. This gets repetitive and annoying especially if you have a lot of coins and when you only have one slot left on a level that you're having trouble with. The prizes don't add any motivation to the player but to complete the game. The game is also very stingy (greedy) with the coins.

Just to let you know, I am judging the team minigames at a singleplayer persective and the battle minigames by a 2 player perspective. I also want to say that I am only judging them by the perspective of the player holding the gamepad.

The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest
In this minigame you use the Gamepad to aim at enemies and shoot arrows at them. I have to admit that the turning around in this game is a huge chore unless you use the left analog stick to do it instead of using the motion controls. The game can be challenging at times and each level has something creative about them, keeping the game from being tedious.

Pikmin Adventure
This game is almost just the same as the real game except that it features some powerups and gimmicks that are not in the real game. This game can be fun at first but eventually gets repetitive after you get far in the game. This is because the later levels only introduce harder versions of enemies and bosses. The bosses aren't so fun either. They basically consist of you dodging their repetitive attacks and running away from them until you can find the right time to throw pikmin to attack them.

Metroid Blast
This game is very fun and engaging. However, I found that aiming was godawful in this game. I usually asend very high so some enemies can't shoot me so easily. That means that I have to aim the gamepad downward a lot which can get very uncomfortable.

Mario Chase
I feel that this minigame is very unfair for the person using the gamepad. It has the yoshi carts if you are playing with only person. If they catch you they will stun you for a short period of time. This can be very frustrating if you are running away from the other player.

Luigi's Ghost Mansion
This minigame consists of the player using the gamepad to control a ghost to catch the other players while avoiding their flashlights. This game is only fun if the other player understands the concept of this game. That is all.

Animal Crossing Sweet Day
In this game, the player using the gamepad controls two guards (one in a cooper costume and another in a booker costume) while the other players run away and steal candy. My feeling about this minigame is the same as how I feel about luigi's ghost mansion. It's only fun if the other players get the concept.

Yoshi's Fruit Cart
In this game, you have to draw a line to guide yoshi to fruit on the television screen. It's a very interesting concept and is very entertaining to play because of that.

Octopus Dance
This minigame consist of copying moves you see Mr. Game & Watch do in rhythm with the music. It can be difficult and frustrating at first but eventually you will get it so much that it's very easy. The music is catchy and you may find yourself playing it again to listen to the music

Donkey Kong's Crash Course
In this game, you tilt and use the gamepad to go through an obstacle course. Just like octopus dance, it can be hard and frustrating at first but eventually you will master this game.

Takamaru's Ninja Castle
In this minigame you flick the touch screen and aim the gamepad at the TV to shoot arrows at ninjas and other stuff. There are all special moves you can do by drawing certain things on the gamepad. The thing I like about this game is that you can choose the duration of the game. You can either trigger the extended story or just stop playing.

Captian Falcon's Twister Race
This minigame consist of moving the gamepad to dodge obstacles on a racetrack. This is kind of enjoyable, I didn't find anything wrong about it.

Balloon Trip Breeze
This game is very addicting and fun. They only problem I have with the game is that it's kind of too long. They could have laid off on all the levels.

Overall, Nintendoland is an okay game and it does show the capabilities of the Wii U but I feel that there was room for improvement.

I give this a 4/5

Edit from 4/8/13: Okay there is something else that I want to add on to this review. This is just minor things that don't really matter that much (but they still do). Few of the minigames on this collection have nothing to do with the real games (not saying that they aren't fun though). This isn't a problem to me. However, this game is missing some of nintendo's greatest franchises. Let me list almost all of them that they could have made into minigames in a spoiler.

Starfox
Wario
Kirby
Earthbound
Fire Emblem
Pilotwings
Punch Out!!
Exitebike
Pokemon
Ice Climber
Devil World
Clu Clu Land
Duck Hunt
Kung Fu
Hogan's Alley
Wild Gunman
Wrecking Crew
Mach Rider
Dragon Quest
Kid Icarus
Pro Wrestling (However, that would be controversial)
Urban Champion (However, that would be controversial also)

I plan on reviewing Game & Wario next when it comes out and that will be it.

Give any opinions if you wish on this review, but NO FLAMING!

Actually you aren't the only one. Most critics like the prizes also.

I don't think the prizes are terrible but I feel that there could have been more to the prizes then them just being for show.

What if you went to an amusement park and played some games and found out that all of their prizes don't work at all and aren't able to be played with? For example, a stuffed bear stuck to a pedestal that you can't play with or even put in your bed to snuggle with. A flashlight stuck on a pedestal (again) that doesn't turn on nor can you use it if a black out happens. A ring inside of a box that you can't take out and put on your finger. A clock or watch that doesn't even tick or do anything. A book that you can't open read. A crown stuck to a pillow that you cannot wear. A suitcase, perse, bookbag or wallet that you can't but anything in. Would you even bother to redeem your tickets or whatever for these prizes? If so, would you only get them to decorate you room? Would you only get them to brag that you got them?

Do you get my point now?
