Commericials and Ads

9-Volt must be my video game counterpart.
Commercials seem to go through ridiculous extremes to sell things. Exploiting women and female celebrities, putting upclose shots of their cosmetics (if it is a cosmetic) and the list goes on. Just look at these videos and you will understand what I mean.

Pepsi (Starring Beyonce) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2smYVl0zrk)
Sheba Cat Food (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkFv1KZzyMo)

In cosmetic and perfume ads, they usually have the women with absolutely stupid looking faces. I have no examples to give right at this moment but I will post some later.

Do you get me now? I will show more examples later. Do you have any examples or comments of your own? Post them!

Okay... I guess we should discuss now?

I hate cosmetics ads. "Look at those beautiful, gorgeous, blatantly Photoshopped, anorexic women! You want to put carcinogens on your skin to make you look prettier! Try our stupidly-expensive varnish and maybe you'll look as fake as these women!"

They drive me nuts. And besides, a good diet makes healthy skin, not beauty products. Same goes for hair.

I feel that women and girls look pretty without makeup. In fact, I feel that make up can sometimes make you look unappealing.

Commercials are there for a reason, they help you find what to buy there not to piss you off. Sure it helps businesses as well.

Breaks are only 3-5 minutes anyway.

Yeah, but that doesn't give them a reason to go through ridiculous extremes such as the things mentioned above. It is okay to be funny, but they aren't. They are intentionaly going through these extremes and actually think it will help sell their product. If you think the ads I shown was bad just wait until I find some old ads from the 60's and 70's. They absolutely tried made women think less of themselves cosmetic and visually and lose their self esteem.

I get through it by looking at the adds critically. So I either point out how the logic doesn't make sense in its own context, or I talk about how it was a bad add because I can't remember what it was for.

I honestly don't care about the cosmetics adds. Maybe it's because I don't see much of it. I have more fun seeing how scientifically inaccurate their claims are.

I'm sorry, are you detesting the idea of commercials in general, or just the ones that go to extreme lengths?

I am not saying that ads and commercials are bad. I am saying that they sometimes take it too far with they way they advertise. Have you seen the slogans for Earthbound back in the 90's. If not, look at the two slogans below.

"It's like living in your gym shoes"
"This game stinks"

No, they just want your business. I don't they care if they help you.

This thread is not about what advertising is for, it is about the extremes companies go through to sell a product. I am not talking about putting your ads everywhere. That is actually a good thing since it can gain a lot of publicity that way. The problem is about the ads themselves. Like when they have women rubbing lotion or soap on their skin in suggestive positions just to sell their lotion or soap.

Also, Purple Yoshi, this is not about the results of the product. I am saying that it is not necessary to pan the camera all up in the model's "eye" to advertise mascara or eyeshadow.

I hate it when they make women like that. It makes me want to buy their product LESS

This old ivory soap ad is a good example of what I am talking about that companies go through ridiculous extremes to sell products

Dishpan+Hands.jpg

Is it really a good idea to tell women that they have dishpan hands unless they use "ivory" soap.

Well, I think it's necessary to sell the product

The reason some ads tick me off is that sometimes, they can make girls and women feel bad about the way they look (and maybe their partners may feel disappointed). I know I'm immune to cosmetics ads, but I hate it when the women shown look flawless, and I wish more women know how impossible it is to look like them. The ads are misleading, and they misinform women.

Other than that, I don't really pay attention to ads. The most annoying ads by far, though, are those stupid video YouTube ads.

How else would one use lotion/soap?

Put it on and just rub it. Not rub at the speed of a turtle or shell and have your body in very inappropriate positions. Also, women do not put lotion on their skin while they are "bare" or in underwear all of the time.

I have a theory that those commercials are eye candy for men so they can secretly look at exploited women while they are married. What I mean by that is that a lot of fathers are couch potatos after they come home from and the wives hardly pay attention to what they are watching. nor do they really care

So I'm the only one that does that?

How do you know nobody puts on lotion while they're bare or in underwear? I for one do that (my skin gets pretty dry).

I never said that, I said nobody does it all the time.

He said "suggestive positions" though

Pre roll YouTube ads need to go.

Actually, a bit of make-up is good, not like how the average teenage girl uses (aka, as much make-up as possible).
I use make-up, but with a natural look, rather than a dark-ish glamour look.
