What expectations should I have for this game?

I just got Super Mario RPG from club nintendo and downloaded it too my Wii. What should I expect from this game. What mindset do I have to be in to enjoy this game.

I don't plan on using any guides, even if I get absolutely lost or stuck. This is the first mario rpg I am going into.

It's got the beginnings of what we now recognize as Paper Mario-style humor, there are some memorable moments and characters, and there is some exploration, though not much. The game pretty much tells you where to go and when, but it's fun (even if I've yet to finish it for whatever reason).
