How do I make a .png file transparent?

I'm using Paint Shop Pro 7, though solutions for Paint.NET or GIMP will be considered too.
It turns out highlighting the white area on the picture with Magic Wand and then erasing it doesn't work. What do I do?

Right click, click "Add Alpha Channel" then try deleting the white areas

GIMP, cuz I don't use Paint.net or Paint Shop Pro (they could have an "Add Alpha Channel"-like option though)

What? You copied the image, added Alpha Channel, then magic wanded the background, and, when you press "Delete", you get blackness instead of a checkered background? I don't get it.

What browser do you use? I heard that Internet Explorer doesn't support transparency

Where do you upload to? May I inspect the image?

I don't understand how the background turns black after you exported it as a .png, but here's what I did:

1. I copied the image you uploaded, and pasted it using "Create->From Clipboard". It's essentially just copying and pasting the image.
2. I deleted the black layer, including the white dots to the left of the image. There is a checkerboard background, indicating it is transparent.
3. I exported the image, making sure the settings are default (such as checking "save background color, save resolution, save creation time, save comment, save color values from transparent pixels" and leaving the rest unchecked).
4. Uploaded with Photobucket, this is the V result V

I think there's something wrong with your .png exporting process

If you have a Mac:
1. Get Seashore.
2. Install it.
3. Open an Image with it.
4. Go to Layer → Enable Alpha Channel.
5. Click that witch stick thingy.
6. Click on the Background.
7. Press Backspace.
8. Save as PNG (GIF and JPG make the Background go back).

Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac.

But you've got the idea, right?
Enable Alpha, select the entire Background, press Delete on Windows and Linux (or Backspace on Mac), and save as PNG.
That's all you need to know/do.

I think that's what he did, but he ended up with a black background

That's actually exactly what I did.
The interesting thing is that when I try that on GIMP, the background turns black, but when I use Paint Shop Pro, it turns white.

Are you sure your .png exporting process is all right?

Usually, when you export a .png in GIMP, a window appears with options on it

Indeed it does. It looks like this.

Make sure the highlighted area reads png to export (save) it as the correct file type.

But let's backtrack to where the black background appears instead of a checkered ones. I find that in GIMP, selecting an area and deleting it without having an alpha channel gives a black background. I believe that the problem may be that you are not correctly adding the alpha channel. See the screenshot below for what to do.

If the image already has an alpha channel, then likewise it won't let you add one. So selecting an area with an alpha channel should make it transparent. I hope this may be of some help. But if not, let us know and we'll keep trying.

No, his problem was that the checkered transparent turns black as he exports it, not during the process itself. I mean, the canvas shows transparency, but the saved .png file gets a black background

Did you do this as exactly on this window? It should show up when you export a .png

EDIT: Maybe try unchecking "Save Background Color"
