Birdo's gender has been disputed, and really, I don't like thinking about it too much, but I thought this would make an interesting poll.

So for me anyway, I think Birdo's a girl. I mean, I don't think it makes sense that she/he/it/whatever would be a guy just by the way it looks. Plus, I've always referred to Yoshi as a guy (even though some claim he's a girl since he lays eggs and stuff).

I know that the Nintendo handbook stated that Birdo was a boy, and that if Yoshi and Birdo are dating then they must be gay, but think about one thing

Yoshi was never claimed to be a boy, so it might be that way around

In curent official canon, there are no clear genders between dinos. Maybe Birdo chooses to act like a girl even thouh she wasn't born as women or men naturally.

Birdo's gender is decided by the person viewing it.

I believe it's a guy because that's how it began, but they've made it pretty clear throughout its appearances that it could be either one.

Yoshi and Birdo might not even have genders for all we know.

im just so sick of people mocking her. its really fucking nasty and bigoted

Same here.

Birdo is a girl. In Japan (and some translations), it's because she's trans, in English (and other translations), it's because they censored the original SMB2 trans story and now just say she's a girl. (Except Brawl, but only because the writers didn't do their research about gender identity and political correctness, so who cares about the dribble spewing out of their mouths.) Even the ambiguous dino sex argument doesn't change things: she still chooses to live as a girl, and that makes her a girl. The End. It's not up to the viewer: it's up to Birdo. It doesn't matter if she's a fictional character, it doesn't matter if you're just joking around - to say she's a boy or worse, an "it" -reducing her to a thing- is ignorant and offensive beyond belief.

I'm not. Birdo isn't trans in my headcanon, just a flamboyant gay Birdo. My headcanon doesn't always have to match what's actual.

And once again Walkazo ends up with the final word on this subject.

Let us never speak of this again.

This seems like a reasonable conclusion. I can see why some people call Birdo an 'it' though, if they're confused as to what gender she actually is and don't want to risk saying the wrong one only to get yelled at by people that think otherwise.

I guess I'm going to start calling Birdo a she now (I'll probably still have the thought that it's still male in the back of my head though).

"It" is not acceptable as a gender-neutral pronoun.

Then what is?

As far as I know, "their" is used most commonly even though it's supposedly grammatically incorrect. I'm pretty sure "hir" (short for "his or her") is grammatically correct (though very uncommon) and I see people on tumblr using "xer" (which isn't an official word.)

It's not acceptable to call a person an "it" because they're a person, not an object.

As far as Birdo goes, Walkazo is right. Birdo identifies as a female. Whether Birdo is a biological female or a transgendered female, you should refer to her with "her," not a gender-neutral pronoun. End of story.

Schle

For a fictional character, it's a placeholder until they find out what gender they are (If they have a gender). It's insensitive to call someone a thing but some people might think it's justified because it is a fictional character, they aren't living so they don't have feelings to be hurt. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that some people are confused as to what gender Birdo is (Which is kind of justified since they haven't really been clear on it) and don't want to get scolded by someone who thinks they know what gender she is for guessing wrong.

Some people don't know that hir is even a word because we only really are expected to use he/him or she/her when talking about a gender and that's alright for them. They obviously don't intend for it to be calling the character an object but sometimes we can take it a bit too literally and make things get out of hand.

Well, I'm keeping my headcanon, but I'll refer to Birdo as she from now on. I wouldn't want to hurt a fictional dinosaur's feelings.

i'm really not amused by this

i'm also not very articulate when i'm angry, or even in general, but i'm going to try this anyway

neither the fact that birdo is fictional, nor the fact that she's a dinosaur, mean that calling her by the wrong pronouns is a defensible action. birdo's feelings arent what's at issue here. this culture consistently erases and dehumanizes trans people, and one method of doing that is by insisting that they are the gender that matches their sex organs, or that they are genderless objects. by referring to birdo as "he" or "it", you perpetuate that pattern and normalise it. even though birdo can't be hurt by it since she's fictional, the fact that youre reinforcing the pattern means that other trans people who really exist can be hurt by it

maybe you like the idea of buttressing social structures that injure all trans people for no reason whatsoever. otherwise, you must insist on using the correct pronouns for everyone, always
