Using a regular HDD with an Xbox 360?

So I've went to several pages and some of them say it is indeed possible to use a regular hard disk drive with an Xbox 360 Slim, but I want to know from someone I trust if it's actually possible. Has anyone here done it? Is it easy? Are there any drawbacks?

Well, that is only way and my friend bought it and it works fine

You may have to use third party software to get it to recognize the hard drive.

I don't know for sure though.
