And here's Sakurai's comment on Miiverse:

Pic of the day. Out of the blue, here's a new stage--the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M! An enemy from Samus's past may appear at any second…

Well God dang it, the way he phrased that makes it sound like Ridley's going to be a mere stage hazard! Then again, there was the infamous "up until now" line that made everyone think Ness wasn't going to appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai gives Ridley the shaft AGAIN! Gosh, it's not like he's the second-most important character in one of Nintendo's biggest franchises, so he doesn't need proper representation as a playable character, I mean GEEZ!

...Personally, I HOPE it's a Lava Golem or something, but since he specifically said "an enemy from Samus's past", it makes me think Ridley...

But then again, seeing as this is Metroid: Other M we're talking about, then it can't be Ridley, because the Ridley in that game isn't the same Ridley from Samus's past, he was just a clone, made as a joke by the scientists in the Bottle Ship...

Gosh, I'm pissing myself off, thinking about Metroid: Other M again!

Now now. Samus has had many enemies in her past. It could be Mother Brain, Kraid, Crocomire, those Spaghetti-O things, etc.

Judging by the stage, which is where Samus fought "Ridley" in Metroid: Other M, it's highly likely that's how Sakurai's talking to.

Though some have pointed out that Super Smash Bros. is very loose with how accurate stages are to the games their from, so perhaps you're right.

It wasn't a joke; the Federation wanted bioweapons because it is run by idiots.

Didn't Madeline Bergman say that they were primarily using the Metroid DNA from Samus's suit to create bio-weapons, and that they found Ridley's DNA on it, and decided to clone him for the heck of it? Like, I don't recall they specifically saying they intended to use him as a bioweapon, and I'm fairly certain they didn't care either way.

MB said they didn't know it was Ridley. They created something, but it didn't molt or whatever until Samus got there. Little Birdie, as it was called, was deemed useless as a bioweapon, so they didn't care what happened to it (at least until it killed that researcher), but my assumption is either no one wanted to deal with it, or MB actually knew what it was, since she is, in a sense, Mother Brain.

It's been so long since I've played Other M, I'm starting to forget the details... All I remember is extreme disappointment.

I want Ridley as Metroid deserves a second rep and he can easily be shrunk afterall, like Chrom says 'ANYTHING CAN CHANGE!'

If Olimar isn't too small, then Ridley isn't too big. If they can put H. Queen playable in Mario Kart 7, if they can put Wizpig playable in Diddy Kong Racing DS, then they can put Ridley playable in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Per this.

Hell, if you hack the game, there are several Ridley hacks where he looks fine when he's about as large as Charizard

Good point.
