I don't know what to say about this... I just feel really sad about it all. :(

that sucks i love rhinos

Man, this stinks. I knew black rhinos were endangered, but I didn't see this coming.

Before everyone freaks out, these are not the famous Rhinos you always see in books and on TV. That is an African White Rhino.

Aww.

I mean, it's one type of rhino, so there's still some others at least.

Now when Panda bears and tigers become extinct. Yeah. Then we'll be crying.

I did a report on Rhinos and every type of Rhino in 3rd grade. I even reported on the this species........quick, we must make Western Black Rhino chicken nuggets so we have proof that they once existed, like dinosaur nuggets.

This is bad, it's just waiting for another animal to become extinct.

We have photos of these Rhino's, unlike dinosaurs.

I think this guy said it best:

"Can hunting poachers be made legal, please?!"

Man, I was really hoping humanity would be beyond this. Freaking hell.

Keep in mind that it's just a subspecies of the black rhino.

I mean sure it's bad, but not that bad.
Homo Sapiens Sapiens are just a sub-species of Homo Sapiens like if they all died it would be bad but not that bad. :P

well then, please forgive me for caring more for humanity than rhinos
See that right there is a glaring problem. Regardless of whether you care about them, you need to acknowledge that they had their role in the ecosystem and all their lives were valuable. Their reason for living was to essentially protect smaller animals and not harm them themselves because they didn't need to eat them to survive. With every death, those other animals are going to have less chance of survival and therefore less chance to hold up their roles, and problems will just continue to spiral from there.

And for what? So humans could get a hard-on. That's it. Something completely perishable that the body could do anyway. What the actual fuck, like how are you not disgusted by that?

but there are other rhinos which will likely fill the exact same role in the ecosystem!

i don't see how this affects the ecosystem tremendously when there are still other rhinos

Because every death has an effect on the ecosystem. It may not be the most easily observed thing for just '1' rhino, but to put it into perspective, think of how many animals could hide behind 100 rhinos compared to 0. Also compare the food that they eat, like, rhinos eat big shrubs because they have the strength to grab and chew it, but with less and less around to eat them then more are just going to grow, leaving less room for smaller shrubs that smaller animals eat.

Not to mention rhino poaching is still a thing so it is just going to continue unless actions are taken. Yes, there are still other rhinos, but the way things are going, that isn't going to be the case forever.

considering conservation efforts have restored the white rhino to "not threatened" status, i'm not really worried about poaching wiping out the entire population of ~20,000 (according to the article in the original post)

Wow we should totally not worry about the poachers at all then right.

That's too bad. Oh, well. At least we have other rhinos.

We're all slowpokes.

Yeah, they stated that it was originally published in 2011, though appears to have been updated like a day ago. I can't work out what the update was.
