Actually as unexpected as the trainer's appearance was. There was some basis for why Wii Fit got the representation it has with the Trainer. Wii Fit is one of Nintendo's most successful games of the Wii. I know that sales does not determine the roster of a Smash Bros. game. But when something outsells even the flagship franchise (Mario) It's probably a safe bet that there's going to be something major for it in Smash Bros.

In the Top selling Wii Games. Wii Fit is #3 (Wii Fit Plus is also there at #11), only beaten by Wii Play, and Wii Sports (Which the latter was a pack-in game). But outsold even Mario Kart Wii, Mario Galaxy, and even Brawl itself. So it seemed either Nintendo or Sakurai thought that was good enough reason to include the Trainer. I'm certain that with the success of the Wii Series we will also eventually get Miis announced as well.

Which in all honesty should be the only way to have a playable Reggie if there's indeed people who think he should get in because of the silly petition. Reggie being playable as actually himself would be all kinds of ridiculous since he's well... a real person.
