Hello everyone, and yes, I do realize there is an anime topic, but I honestly think Hetalia is a big enough fandom.

Hetalia Wiki (Possible Spoilers)

Another Hetalia Wiki

Hetalia got its name from a mashup of the Japanese word "hetare" (roughly translated to "unreliable" or "useless") and "Italia"/"Itaria", the Japanese word for Italy. As the wiki says on the front page:
This is to make light of Italy's apparent cowardice during World War II and overall character.

The series itself actually originated from a Japanese webcomic, then was adapted into a manga series, and then an anime series, and was all written by Himaruya Hidekazu.

The rest of it I'm not going to explain right now in the OP, that's what the wiki link is for.

Also, while I actually don't mind spoilers, some people do, so please keep spoilers in the Spoiler tags, m'kay?

Honestly, I'm considering a Hetalia theme switch. I'm either going back to Belarus or Liechtenstein (probably Belarus, if I do, actually) or I might be Italy... Haven't decided.

Hey, DF, maybe we should both be Hetalia themes (possibly characters that go together in some way, idk) temporarily. Just an idea. You don't have to if you don't want to though, even though I'll still probably do a Hetalia theme either way.

Japan is awesome, Austria is pretty cool, but Italy is also awesome in his own ways (I <3 Italy) too.

Okay, that's fine.

Maybe I could be Nyo!Japan (meaning Gender-swapped/female Japan). Or Italy. Or Belarus. I can't decide!

Not really. A bit confusing, maybe, but I dunno about weird.

Okay, that leaves Italy, Liechtenstein or Belarus to choose from... What to do, what to do...

I love Hetalia.

The fact that it's mostly told through little sketches, character songs and extra tidbits of info on Himaruya's blog (and whatnot) leaves tonnes up to the imagination - which makes it sorta like the plot-lite Mario series in that sense. Himaruya's attitude is also part of the appeal imho - it's refreshing: answering fan questions, still making new webcomic material instead of saying "nope, you'll have to pay for everything now that I've made it big", and just doing random stuff like Nyotalia and the 2P alternate character designs - it's the sorta stuff fandoms like to do, and here we have the creator himself doing it too. Then of course there's the oodles of fanworks to help fuel the headcanon fires, from artwork (and YouTube slideshows) to dōjinshi manga to fan-made games like Hetaoni... It's a series that's hard to get bored of, at least in my experiences.

It helps that I've always been taken in by fiction that cleverly adapts one thing into another, be it based in history, mythology, folktales, classic literature, modern culture and news stories, or even well-done fanfiction AUs and crossovers. Of course, as with everything, there's a lot of crap, but it can also be gold - and Hetalia is one of the series that does it well (Scandinavia and the World is also a good history/culture-based comic series - and was created in response to Hetalia).

Plus it makes you want to learn about the actual histories, cultures, and even geographies, languages and flag designs. Just don't use the series for the education and it's a good thing.

Also, there's a non-wikia version of the wiki, btw.

I knew about that other wiki, I just linked to the Wikia one since it's apparently the "new one". I'll put the link in the OP.

I can agree on the learning part. I don't use it for the actual education, but it makes it more fun to learn more about it all.

watched today in class, and now pretty much my whole class has decided to watch it
what have I done :P

considering a Germany theme

If you do Germany then I'm switching to Italy. :P

I was deciding between him and Liechtenstein anyways, and I just chose her because I was her the longest.

I once suggested it to my history teacher when I took World History. After looking upon it, he thought I was crazy.

I found a fandub of the Belarus x Russia clip called "Marry me marry me". Creepy, but hilarious.

And for those who have trouble with embed vids (like me):

http://youtu.be/01iRjwb4Kww

Belarus: Now, marry me, marry me, marry me, marry me
Russia: GO AWAY GO AWAY GO AWAY GO AWAY! D:

Have you listened to "Carrots and Sticks" yet? It's a duet between Belarus and Ukraine directed towards Russia.

One of my favourite character songs.

Oh yeah, haven't heard that one yet. I meant to do it last night after I found that video, but I got tired and fell asleep.

I'll listen to it sometime today. It's too early at the 'mo.

Nordics are the best 8)

The history and stereotype jokes are amazing, and I laughed hard in one of the season 3 episodes about the War of the Austrian succession.

"To sum it up for Americans: something happened in other countries that didn't involve explosions or kicking ass."

edit: Can you really "spoil" Hetalia events?

Also the Chibitalia storyline, especially the debate about

whether or not Germany is HRE with amnesia.

It totally does, but coming to the conclusions for yourself is part of the fun (imho).

Way to teach your sister, Switzerland. :P

Yeah, it'd be the same for me, even though I don't really catch animals or anything.

Also, there were a few other pics like that that I had before but I have to go find them again. *le sigh*

I don't anymore, but when I was little I'd catch frogs and fish and keep them in tanks for a day or so then put them back

We once raised minnows in science class, but the teacher decided to keep them in small plastic tubs as the "tank", with rocks and a small plant in them.

I feel sorry for the minnows. They all died before the unit was finished. ;-;

Also,
