I can't believe the number one criticism the first game got was the waggle. It worked fine! Yes, it did suck if you were just using the Wiimote, indeed. It was insanely awkward. Which makes me wonder if all the hate for the first game came from non-nunchuck users. But with both the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, it worked like a dream. Any mistake was your fault, and it really dragged you into it. My favorite move with the motion controls was ground pounding. It really made you feel like you were the mighty DK. It reminded me of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. I can't understand the hate for the waggle. I finally got an HD TV for my game room, and I will not even be using the tablet. I will exclusively use the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo next month.

This is such a controversial and widely discussed topic everywhere else on the Web where the new DKCs are discussed that I literally cannot believe NOBODY had an opinion to offer what the fuck

Honestly, I didn't have much of a problem with it. I've dealt with motion controls that are much, much worse.

Maybe it's not as controversial as you think it is? I mean it is a minor nitpick for some people?

It's definitely not as controversial as he thinks. Sometimes it doesn't even get brought up in discussions about the game.

Also, I don't mind the waggle controls.

It really does work best in the new game. How anyone from Gamefaqs could call it 'clunky' is beyond me.

Because, well, it's GameFAQs

Well, yes. I shouldn't have to deal with the innherent added imprecision of motion controls (not to mention short-lived muscle memory problems from playing the older DKCs) when there's a very simple solution for that problem.

I cleared DKC Returns with the horizontal Wiimote setup. It was a fantastic experience and easily the best Nintendo platformer released in the last 15 years. But there's absolutely no budgetary, time or game design issues that would have prevented having the option to use physical input to roll. Not having such an option is stupid.

You could have used the nunchuck and the rolling would have gone from horribly awkward to perfectly natural. People think a D-Pad must be used for 2D side-scrollers because of the NES and SNES days. And it did work great. But so does an analog control stick. Think about it: What did the Donkey Kong Arcade use, and Pacman, and all of the other original 2D arcades use? And it worked fine.

I shouldn't have to use a foreign and (in my opinion) less comfortable control method because of an extremely simple design oversight, though.

... A fixed 8-direction joystick? Those aren't comparable with analog sticks at all.

Using an analog stick for 2d platformers that don't actually feature analog input "works fine". It's also inferior.

What makes it inferior? I do just use the horizontal Wii Mote only with the NSMBs, because NES style controls are all that is needed. But I can't tell much difference. If you are underwater in Tropical Freeze, this is where an advantage for the analog really shines. If you are running, you don't have to hold a button down to run with the analog stick, and running is what you'll be doing practically the whole time. Andre from GameXplain said he thought the Wii Mote/Nunchuck worked best. But hey, you have the option to use the GamePad. So that's why it is good to have options so people who don't like it can have other options and still enjoy the game.

A lot of people just have it in their head that it is inferior, but I have never had a problem going in any direction I wanted to go, so I just don't get it really.

What makes it inferior

Analog sticks are designed for more precise controls in a 3d environnement. Most games on a 2d playing field are not designed around precision controls and don't really benefit from it. What they do benefit from (especially hard fast paced platformers like DKC Returns), however, is quick input response. No matter how tiny the deadzone, an analog stick is inevitably going to have longer (if only very slightly) response time compared to a D-pad due to travel.

It's cool you prefer using the joystick for DKC Returns. I don't.
