In the wake of Donald Sterling's controversy, the Redskins team has been getting a lot of flak.

What is your view on the subject?

I think it should be changed. I know tradition is important and all, but honestly, the name is a racist slur. I'd be fine if it was just the Indians like how Cleveland does it because we have The Fighting Irish, The Ragin' Cajuns, etc. But "Redskin" is horribly offensive.

they should change their logo to a potato

everyone wins

If the majority of Native Americans don't give a shit, I don't give a shit (I think the number of people who put forward the complaint this time around is five, unless I'm mistaken). By majority, I'm going by this.

^That, basically. I don't see why people really care if Native Americans themselves don't.

words are only as offensive as the people who would be offended by them believe they are

so basically, what m4e said. not really much reason to change it if most people are okay with it

Uh, they do care.

It's racist, end of.

It would be no different than calling the team the Washington Darkies or the Washington Chinkies.

That's a survey from almost 10 YEARS AGO and the only asked 768 American Indians.

Hardly a good survey.

It's not a matter of "if they don't care, I don't care" for me

It's a matter of "I honestly couldn't give less shots about an 80 year old football team's name"

there is a baseball team that has this as their logo, though

Yeah, that's the Cleveland Indians.

Like I said, I'm fine with that because that's in the same boat as Notre Dame's Fightin' Irish or the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Ragin Cajun.

Ugh. This.
Well, the only people I seem to see arguing that it's offensive are all non-Native Americans, but they all claim it's offensive to them, and continue to not show evidence.

If I get evidence of it being offensive? Yeah, sure, it's offensive. Right now though, the only thing I'm getting is a bunch of people decided to charge in and claim it's offensive when no one else gives a *bleep*.

I feel like this could be "It's only racist if you think it is racist" thing. I mean, I think is was just another synonym for Indian or Native American. It's like saying the word "pig" is offensive, because it has an offensive slang. So for this reason, I do not think it is a problem, and people are just making it a problem.

I have a problem with the Indians' aforementioned logo, because it's a rather butt-ugly caricature and should be replaced with something a little more professional.

The Redskins, though, I'm kind of more neutral on. If there's enough offense and outrage from Native Americans to the point where it needs to be changed, let it be changed. But if most Native Americans aren't offended, I don't see a reason to change.

I will say, though, that neither side should be saying what does or doesn't offend Natives; offense is a personal matter, and no one has the right to force their opinions onto them, nor anyone else.

So was "negro" for black people. What's your point? Would it be ok to have a team called the Negroes?

Agreed here. The Redskins logo at least looks dignified. Even if the team isn't.

curious as to why they suddenly brought this up as the team name wasnt even relevant for so many years, or at least didnt have any major relevance for quite some time.

It's like some people are bored now and just start random crap up for the hell of it.
