This is something I never really figured out; if colorful mushrooms mean new posts and black-and-white mushrooms mean no new posts, what do the faded mushrooms mean?

It means that the main topic (e.g. - Forum Games) does not have any new posts but one of the sub-boards (e.g. - Mafia) has a new post.
