I'm not a fan of most of these directors (Only a fan of Jackson on this list), but I believe these directors would be legit choices. BTW in case you're wondering, no this has nothing to do with my movie idea.

None, because last time somebody tried, it failed tremendously. If anything, it should be animated.

peter jackson, the wachowskis, and spielberg have all failed me as some point, so i'm not really a believer than they can certainly do a mario movie

if i had to pick, though, i'd probably go with spielberg. he's excellent at creating the fun, frivolous adventure spirit (indiana jones) that a mario movie should have

Of course it should be animated, let me fix the title here

I mean, the original movie was live action. And I still agree that it wouldn't work.

Maybe an animated Mario movie that has no tie-ins to this one

True, but then again, it's hard to make an extremely detailed plot for a Mario film.

Any director can do animation. Tim Burton did Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie, Spielberg did Tintin, Zemeckis did Polar Express and A Christmas Carol, and Peter Jackson is doing Tintin 2

They're not really big-name animators though. The animation from the people you mentioned are slightly off the mainstream. I can't put a finger to it, but it's not like DreamWorks, Pixar, BlueSky (name? They made Rio and Ice Age), Universal Studios, or Disney.

Not just gaming.

You need a director who knows and respects the source material.

does it even freaking matter?
Well it makes sense to hire a director that knows about gaming
most people who sign up to do projects know next to nothing about any of the source material, they just do it for money

they'll make adaptions to things to get money out of them

but to answer your earlier question, odds are he's played mario and he likes it
