there have been ddos attacks going on all day as far as i can tell
i wouldnt be surprised if the two were related

Um, is the always-online DRM part of the problem? Just wondering, since I don't know what is exactly being affected. I know it's online servers, but can you still play games on them?

Not just those three; a lot of other company's servers are being DDOS'd.

Always-online DRM is a different thing entirely.

DDoS (Denial of Service / Distributed Denial of Service) attacks occur when people send large amounts of requests to servers, flooding them so that other people can't use them. Depending on the severity of the attack, sometimes you can still play the games / use the service, it just might be really slow; but sometimes they're severe enough to prevent anyone from using them and they need to be rebooted.

Always-online DRM is a type of Digital Rights Management (DRM, go figure), and is basically a technology that prevents you from using a service if you're not connected to the internet. Sony hasn't put it in place on PS4, but if they did, an example might be preventing a disk (game, CD, DVD, etc) from being read if you were offline.
