In pokemon games, each Pokemon has one or two types and can usually "evolve", or turn into a new pokemon. Let's do that with Mario characters.
Goomba (Normal)

Paragoomba (Normal + Flying)
Koopa Troopa (Normal)

Parakoopa Troopa (Normal + Flying)
Red Koopa (Fire)

Paratroopa (Fire + Flying)
Cheep Cheep (Water)

Now make others. There can be up to 3 in an evolutionary family, and 1 or 2 types. Here are the types:
-Normal = Nothing special
-Flying = Things with Wings
-Poison = Poisonous stuff
-Ground = Lives strictly on or under the ground
-Stone = Rocky or at least rock-hard
-Bug = Insect-like
-Ghost = Ghostly
-Metal = Made of metal
-Fire = Firey or a fire-user
-Water = Lives in water
-Grass = Plant-like
-Thunder = Electric
-Magic = Uses magic
-Ice = Icy or frozen
-Dark = Evil
-Unique = Doesn't fit in other types
