so someone on donkey kong universe discovered there's a kaizo mario-style romhack for Donkey Kong Country 2. Here's a full playthrough of it.

It's insane, it's cruel, and it's beautiful. If you thought the Kaizo Mario formula was well and truly tired, think again!

oh roy.

a rhinoceros crate opens, only to reveal a sign forbidding rhinoceroses. a floating crocodile pokes its head into reality, then removes it. rambi flees in fear from the sight of his own clone, but he cannot save himself from being transformed into a balloon shaped like a monkey's face. this is a metaphor for life in a capitalist society

also, i feel like this would be much improved if there were a way to manually activate that animation where diddy throws his hat on the ground and stomps on it

Turns out there's also a Kaizo DKC too, with more extra-nasty glitched colour palettes.

I'd like to see a Kaizo Crash Bandicoot.

can you imagine the crate puzzles

Some people like a challenge.

Some people REALLY REALLY like a challenge.

For those people, this is porn.

ok, but i feel like the main challenge here would be not getting so bored you lose the will to live. i mean, lets be honest. you spend 99% of your time retreading parts of the level you've already seen as you work your way back to the last place you died. it's extremely dull

i do think this hack is better than most though, since it has some variety in the level designs instead of just one "navigate through this extremely narrow tunnel with walls made of instant death" after another

kaizo isnt really challenge, its just bad design.

there's a difference between challenging design and bad design.

bad design would be a lot of the same shit over and over again which in the original kaizo hacks at least never happens.

challenging design is original dkc2, its hard and enjoyable

bad design is unfair crap that has little warning, kinda like memorizing level design.

this looks stupidly infuriating

well i didnt watch the videos of this one but the original kaizo did have intelligent design. like there wasn't anything totally random (except for all of those hidden blocks, but after a while you start expecting them anyways).

I know that for me. the appeal of good Kaizo hacks isn't really playing them as much as it is to see in what new and inventive ways it'll screw over, what obscure quirks of the game it'll ask you to master if you want to survive... etc. The orignal Kaizo was very clever and creative, but most Kaizo hacks suck because they plagiarize it or have lame traps.

And Here is PRGMDEST showing the BEST Kaizo trap I have EVER seen at the 2:10 mark - Basically you have to trigger a death to overcome an obstacle (the alive form of you can't) but you have to die while not losing a life. The ONLY way to do this is to clip the edge, get hit by a cannonball, and have 9-o-tails grab you simultaneously, so you die from the cannon but then are thrown up so you get you movement back/don't lose a life. This triggers the music to stop as if you had died. The reverse engineering in these hacks is insane.

Of course, there's probably some people on an obscure corner of the internet that believe kaizo hacks are totally fair and that you can get through them with pattern recognition. Those people are dumb.

bad design are those mario maker levels that try to be hard by throwing enemies all over the place, doors leading you into fucking lava and those annoying invisible block traps

indeed, but so is this.

well i enjoy watching them too. but i mean, what is the appeal for players? that dkc2 series seemed to be made as a guide for players, considering that it explained things like how to figure out where the ground is in 8-2 or how to control the kart in 5-2. and it seemed like whoever was recording was also doing it without save states?? that just sounds like self torture
