Mario games happen one after the other execpt for Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and the Yoshi's Island games. Simple as that, Mario isn't Zelda.

I chose the second option seeing as it's more accurate but I believe the timeline goes on how new the games are eg. New Super Mario Bros Wii happens after Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story because it came out on a later date.
