I've never had any Mario Party games in my life and all I have to play them is a Wii, lol. Which one should I go for?

Fortune Street.

Mario Party 8 is the weakest of the Mario Party titles prior to 9, but 9 still makes Mario Party 8 look brilliant. Mario Party 8 has a big roster while Mario Party 9 will feel pared down. Mario Party 9 does have much superior minigames though. But if you have time to kill, then Fortune Street can work. Fortune Street is like Monopoly, so telling you right now, it'll eat hours.

Looks interesting, but playing at least one Mario Party is required for me to improve my ranking as a Mario fan.

I'm sure more people have played MP games than Fortune Street.

EDIT: Ranking? What ranking? This post is fucking ridiculous lol.

both are really bad tbh.

MP9 has shitty gameplay , meanwhile MP8 has shitty minigames.

you can't really pick between them , it's like trying to choose between being stabbed to death or drowing to death.

You ultimately die in the end.

It's like trying to choose either naked hot-tubbing with Rush Limbaugh as your parents cheer and snap photos or drinking warm Heineken and having no one to talk to but people who are having trouble with their boiler and students who've just spent three months in Thailand and want to tell you all about how they got dysentery in Chiang Mai, while a Savage Garden fan is hanging round the stereo all night glaring at anyone who tries to suggest an alternative.

Well of course 8 is gonna have a big roster when it's been re-using assets for about 5 games at that point. :P

try telling that to games after 9 where they mysteriously cut characters and introduce new ones like Bowser Jr., Koopa, Shy Guy, Diddy, and Kamek and reintroduce Donkey Kong and Toadette and Boo, only to cut them the next game.

Ranking?

Of the two, I've only played 8 (and FS), and I had a lot of fun with it. Obviously, get more people involved :P

Oh that part is easy.

They cared even less than they did already.

btw if you hate Miis, Fortune Street isn't the game for you. You can't use anyone else aside from those globular zombies in the single player mode.

Uh, can you guys please explain why the gameplay is bleepty or why the minigames are bleepty?

No need to self-censor like that. 8)

Mario Party is pretty infamous for having luck-based elements. Mario Party 8 has a very repetitive single player mode, which you need to go through at least twice to unlock both locked characters (and the second time is as Hammer Bro. or Blooper you unlocked, because in the last board, you fight either Hammer Bro. or Blooper, who are the locked characters).

The minigames in Mario Party 8 use a good amount of motion controls, some which feel phoned in like Cut from the Team. Rudder Madness is a bad one, where you're on a slow-moving raft and you simply tilt the Wii Remote to steer. There's another minigame called Flip the Chimp and that's where the motion controls are finicky and just suck, as well as the slow, dreary pace of the minigame.

You probably will understand Mario Party 8's faulting if you play the previous ones, I'd personally rather play that than Mario Party 9. Mario Party 9 is entirely dependent on your mini-star count, and there are a lot of events that you have little control over, thanks to the car mechanic, that can jeopardize that mini-star count, usually by taking away half.

Depends entirely on what you value most in a Mario Party game. If you mainly care about the mini-games and not much else. Get 9. The board gameplay unfortunately can make it so you barely play any. But most minigames are available in the Mini-Game mode (The only ones that are locked I believe are many boss minigames) by default as a bit of a compromise. Where as in 8 you still have to unlock most of them by playing the board gameplay alot like in previous games.

If however you're a big fan of the individual movement and board gameplay of the past Mario Party games. Then get 8. The motion control in the mini-games can be janky. But 8 actually has a pretty robust board gameplay with items that feel like they harken back to the item systems before the capsules that made up the items in Mario Parties 5, 6, and 7. You can still have some of the same fun board gameplay stuff happen in the previous games did like you can with the previous games. I do kinda feel Mario Party 8 is slightly underrated (Maybe that's kind of weird to say when Mario Party 8 has actually won Favorite Mario Party at least once in the Mario awards in this community heh) in terms of Mario Party standards. It's still in the lower half of the series. But I'd play it over the first Mario Party and Mario Party 7 personally. Let alone 9 and 10.

I personally like 8 a whole lot and don’t care for 9. But they are two completely different games and you’re better off watching playthroughs to decide.

How old is your Wii, by the way? If you got it before November 2011, you should be able to play Mario Parties 4-7 as well (assuming you have a GameCube controller and memory card).

If you have a Wii Classic Controller and at least 1000 points on your Wii Shop account, you can play Mario Party 2 as well. I hear that is one of the best in the series.

Can't exactly add any more points if he doesn't have it. You now have to either have a Wii U and get it via Wii U virtual console or the original N64 + MP2 cartridge to play it officially (Meaning aside from N64 emulation on your computer)

Having played both, I'd recommend 8. The minigames may not be the best, but they're not really that bad. Plus the board gameplay of 8 is a lot better than 9's.

I'd recommend Mario Party 8.

Mario Party 8 by far isn't a perfect game. It suffers from technical issues such as 30 fps board gameplay (when Mario Party board gameplay has almost always been 60fps) and the lack of a widescreen support (that I STILL can't believe they manage to lack support of). Some of the minigames really suck with the motion control implementation. But the board gameplay itself is what really sets it apart from 9, even though 9 has stronger minigames. I can't stand the car at all. The "move with everyone" gameplay made things far too luck dependent, and the toning down of what items you can use (you can use only variants of dice blocks) made item usage a lot less fun than being a vampire and taking away coins or stealing stars from other players as a Bullet Bill that 8 lets you do. In addition, Mario Party 8 has a lot of varied boards with all different types of gameplay, and I think board aesthetics are better there than they were in the previous Mario Party games. And even though there is a lot of bad minigames in 8, there's plenty of fun ones too like Cosmic Slalom and Scooter Pursuit.

Not to mention, Mario Party 8 has a stronger roster than 9.

So what 9 has over 8 is better minigames and graphics (I prefer 8's soundtrack). 8 has a better board gameplay and a stronger character roster, which makes it worth getting over 9 because if you don't have a good board gameplay, there's pretty much no point to playing the game outside of minigames, in which 9's minigames aren't THAT much better to put over the entirety of 8.

I'd just model import Baby Luigi over Toad and call it a day like usual.

8 does have the masturbation game.

i wouldn't drink it

To this day, I still don't understand the deal behind Shake It Up. You people are weird.

i still wouldn't drink soda after you shook the can like that in that minigame.

if you tried doing it in real life, the stuff gets everywhere. AND the carbonation gets more quickly lost.

if you want to cause a fountain, drop some mentos into diet soda. what a blast.

Not really weird. Humans intentionally and unintentionally apply phallic imagery to things all the time.
