When "Game Over" is good

What do you think of when you see the words "Game Over"? Usally, you think about losing all of your lifes in a video game, which is a pretty bad thing, of course.

However, i just played Wii Party and noticed somehing interesing: "Game Over" is telling you that a game is over and it's time to announce the winner, a pretty good thing - as you can see here: https://youtu.be/24bfNlkCa20?t=36m31s.

Interesing, don't you think?

Game Over means that the game is over. So don't be weirded out when you see "Game Over" when you finish a game. However, why is it Game Over when you lose? Does this mean you finished the game with a bad ending?

That's a good point. In fact, Mario RPGs (And maybe also other RPGs) have bad endings proceed by Game Overs.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Supersponge (at least the GBA version that I played) says Game Over when you beat the game. In fact it's literally the same screen as the Game Over screen, music and all, it just adds "Thank you for playing." underneath "Game Over"

The term "game over" simply means that the game is over. The game is indeed over when you lose, which is why you need to return to a previous save point to continue.

But many people don't notice this. Most games also have a "game over" screen when you win. However, because the term "game over" has come to mean "you lost" since the old arcade days, games often say "the end" instead of "game over". But really, "the end" and "game over" both give you the same message. The difference is that "the end" often implies "you won", while "game over" often implies "you lost".
