I meant to do this way before Dark Horse released their English version of this book, but given the fiasco with it I figured I'd get back to working on it. I ended up taking way longer on this than I expected, but it's finally mostly done.
The purpose of this is to translate the terms used in the original Japanese book as they're supposed to be read, then use that as a baseline to talk shop about what to do with naming all of these bits of data.
Note on the format used:
[Japanese characters as printed]/romaji or Engrish/"actual meaning"
If the name is literally just English, the latter two will be skipped and the name will be displayed with no italics or quote marks.
If the name is a pun or onomatopoeia or some other thing that really only makes sense when spoken in Japanese, the "actual meaning" will be left out and only the italics will be displayed.
I will devote one post to each game's given section. Character, Power-Up, Item and object names will be displayed. Course names, if the Courses are named, will be skipped for now as all of those except for Mario Land 2's are readily-accessible within their respective games.
To kick this off, this first post covers Super Mario Bros.:
