Lack of food as power-ups in some Mario games

I've noticed that in Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3 and Super Mario 64, no food is served as power-ups -- well, other than mushrooms, which I wouldn't count anyways. You think there should have been real food as power-ups in these games? If so, which ones?

what if the leaves, feathers, and tanooki/frog suits ARE food though

feathers and tanookis arent foods tho

Raccoon dogs are hunted by humans extensively, including in Japan, so I assume some of that goes toward nourishment.

Joke aside, why do they need to be food? To fit in with Namco and the 80's arcade/casino scene? I'll admit I love that old trope.

But why food? I don't see Super Mario eating the power ups.. he just runs into them and they kinda, fuse?

I suppose Paper Mario eats them, but his reality works differently.. and he has a lot of food items!
..
But now that you mention it.. It would be fun to have a Cooking Mario minigame in the next 3D Mario!
Food items could be his health replenish and element shields like in Paper Mario!

it's amusing that Mario has had a few different suits based on small furry animals that give him flight, but no suit based on the small furry animal that can actually fly (the bat).

Well because food is just food in the Mario series. Besides regular mushrooms, it's implied that the characters only need to touch or hold onto power-up items to use the abilities they grant; Super Mario 3D Land and World allow you to swap between power-ups at will as long as you're using one and carrying another.

On the other hand, the first three Paper Mario games have an entire list of recipes you can have made to restore HP and/or FP, but I'm guessing that's not what you were going for?

Well, I was mentioning some Mario games, Paper Mario not necessarily being one of them.

To be fair, I could see that being the case for some wackier mini games in the Mario Party series. And Wario eats garlic to turn into Wario-Man, while Yoshi could eat certain fruits and peppers in Super Mario Galaxy 2 to gain temporary abilities. Those are foods in their raw, natural state though, not prepared meals.
