What are tags?

When i'm gonna post a thread, under it where it says attach files, and preview, it says tags....what are they?

Tags are words or phrases that connect with the subject, and appear at the top of the thread, next to the thread creator and time created. It is used mainly for thread searches, as the words in the tag can also be picked up by the search function.

They are not essential though, and a thread can be alright without any.

So does that mean ...like....if my thread was called 'in the woods' and my tag said 'somnom' people would know it was about somnom woods?

Yes. But I think it's better to put Somnom Woods instead of just Somnom. As @House Of The Living Trab said, they make searching a lot easier

I know this doesn't go here but how do you lock a thread so no one else can reply?

Only mods can do that. If something in the Help Desk is resolved, it can be moved to Resolved, where it's usually locked.
