I'm guessing it slipped past the radar or something.. if it was rated PG in the old days but today's better understandings would make it R.
Similarly I started watching the late 60's anime Speed Racer which I believe was for kids or young teens. I was surprised to see the villains using animated real guns.

don't forget that the opposite can happen too
iirc 2001 a space odyssey was originally rated x (which didn't have the, well, connotations that is has nowadays and basically just meant 'not really a film aimed at kids' regardless of the content itself) but nowadays the film is rated g since there really isn't anything objectionable in the film
