What happened to Super Mario Odyssey 2?

I don't get why people just assumed Odyssey 2 was going to happen
I always saw it come up here and there and just dismissed it because I know Nintendo ain't ever gonna be that predictable

What happened to Super Mario Odyssey 2? The same thing that happened to Super Mario Galaxy 3.

Basically something that only happens in fan expectations, because the original did so well. Maybe Super Mario Galaxy 2 gives fans the impression that sequels are guaranteed? (Though, I wouldn't mind a follow up of Super Mario Sunshine...)

There are a lot of ideas for Super Mario Odyssey 2, such as more kingdoms, Luigi, more costumes, etc. But look at what happened to the rumored Super Mario Sunshine 2 and Super Mario Galaxy 3.

I think Nintendo has more ideas they would prefer to work on. Then again, Mario Odyssey 2 could be a launch title for the Switch 2.
