Well, you all have made it an incredible year, haven't you? Let's take a look at just some of the marquee events that have happened since we last gathered in celebration here, shall we?

Just before these ceremonies last year, we saw the conclusion to the community's first Randomizer KG courtesy of Waluigi Time, Roserade, and a creative cast of players who cooperated to spin a memorable little narrative. Not long after that, GBA, 2257, and TPG delivered us the incredibly atmospheric Camp Sedonia in Minecraft Games and debuted the DREAMB concept, a concept which our community members took to like ducks to water, creating an assortment of dazzling mini-worlds that had us rethinking our sense of scale, had us going on mysterious jaunts, and even had nostalgia welling up in us. (And, yes, there were rats. Rats as far as the eye could see. Rats in the vending machines even.) As if that weren't enough, TPG took us back to Port Pailassos, now sporting a winter coat, and had us running through parkour courses and cooking up treats through a whole weekend of fun and games!

I don't know if it's the same for everyone else, but those three events alone feel like they should have years between them! Yet, they don't. All of these happened in the span of one year, only months apart from each other. If that's not a testament to this community's creativity, passion, and willingness to come together to lift these kinds of projects up, I don't know what is!

In the same year, we saw Yap run the latest iteration of the iconic Scribble tournament and saw TPG push the format in new directions with the experimental Scribble Labs. Again, it blows me away to think we saw both of them in one year's time, each drawing in both returning scribblers and brand new artists. It goes to show you the strength of the format and its openness to artists of all skill levels to see new faces in every iteration, and it also goes to show how eagerly the members of our community will support these kinds of projects and boost each other by all joining in together. We have Toadbert's Scribble Smorgasbord on the horizon, and I know you'll bring the same enthusiasm to it!

Behind all of these massive events, we've had so much happening. We've seen the MBMB and we've seen RHG1951 move into managing the Spotlight and spearhead a massive Mushroom Kingdom Hearts April Fool's joke. We've seen MightyMario take the lead on the Poll Committee in his first position of leadership in this community and we've seen Shoey take the helm at The 'Shroom. We've answered daily questions in the ask board and voted in Wiki proposals. We've continued to not wash cars at a car wash and raced against one another in Mario Kart. We've chatted and we've seen a story years-in-the-making wrap up as we finished our investigations. We've played drawing games and pondered battles between the mysterious John Pork and Mallow.

What we've done in one year feels like it could fill three, and, in addition to all of that, we put together The 'Shroom: Issue 200, a truly massive and incredibly ambitious edition of the paper that featured over one hundred sections reflecting the work of well over fifty contributors!

Not many communities in this day and age could accomplish all of that in one year's time! We have a truly incredible little slice of the web here, a community bursting at the seams with creativity, enthusiasm, and support among its members. I know we'll all work to keep it that way, so, today, let's celebrate what all we've accomplished together, and bask in all of these achievements!

Today, remember both the marquee events that blew you away and those moments a stray conversation or a clever edit summary made you chuckle! Today, whether you edit the wiki or make games on the forum, whether you wrangle Minecraft's code or chat on Discord, whether you write for The 'Shroom or you like to show off your art around here, whether this is your first Awards or you've been attending these ceremonies for over a decade and a half, celebrate, cheer, and laugh!

Come on, folks! We've done a lot this year, and the show to celebrate all of it is about to start, so settle in, sit back, and enjoy!

I seem to have found a portal leading to a bunch of doors... Mind giving them a look over to see what you can find?

Portal is HERE

Two very important things to note before you begin exploring:
1. I apologize in advance for how many new tabs you'll probably be opening during the course of this exploration, this was the only way I could get it to reasonably work
2. FOR MY FRIENDS WITH EPILEPSY / OTHER ISSUES WITH FLASHING IMAGES: the page for second place contains instances of flashing static imagery. This is also marked in the portal hub itself. Proceed with caution.

HEY HEY, TV EXECUTIVES! IT'S YOUR SOON-TO-BE BIG STAR HERE, TELLER VISION! YOU MAY KNOW ME FROM... PROGRAMS THAT ARE DEFINITELY NOT MORALLY QUESTIONABLE IN THE SLIGHTEST! DON'T BOTHER LOOKING! I'M COMPLETELY SUITABLE TO HOST THIS SHOW!

SO, WHAT FOLLOWS IS MY PITCH FOR A BRAND NEW CHILDREN'S SHOW WHERE WE... LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD AND DEVELOP PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS, I GUESS. THE IMPORTANT PART IS THAT THERE'S WHEELS AND FLAMINGOS IN IT! IT'S GOING TO BE A BIG HIT WITH ALL THE SNOT-NOSED BRATS WHO WON'T ACTUALLY APPRECIATE- I MEAN, YOUNG CHILDREN WHO NEED THE COGNITIVE STIMULATION THIS SHOW WILL PROVIDE. YEAH, THAT'S WHAT I MEANT TO SAY.

(SERIOUSLY I'VE PITCHED SHOWS FOR LIKE TEN DIFFERENT GENRES SO FAR AND THEY ALL GOT CANNED. I NEED THIS. I'M DESPERATE.)

ANYWAY, HERE IT IS! I'VE DONE MY RESEARCH ON THESE KINDS OF SHOWS AND APPARENTLY KIDS DON'T UNDERSTAND CLEVER OR CREATIVE TITLES SO I'M JUST CALLING THIS TELLER'S HOUSE. COME UP WITH SOMETHING BETTER IF YOU WANT, JUST DON'T MAKE IT TOO GOOD OR IT'LL BE WASTED!

C3-2.png

WELL, LOOK WHAT WE HAVE HERE! A FRIEND CAME TO VISIT US! SAY HI TO OUR FRIEND, FLAMBÉ!

"..."

(OKAY, I'M JUST GOING TO ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. YES, THIS IS AN OVERSIZED PLUSHIE I BOUGHT FOR FIFTY SMACKERS AT JOJAMART. FOR THE REAL SHOW I'M GOING TO NEED YOU GUYS TO SPRING FOR A REAL TRAINED FLAMINGO. I DON'T HAVE THE BUDGET, I'M STUCK WORKING IN SOME PATHETIC AMUSEMENT PARK CASINO JUST TO GET ENOUGH MONEY TO PUT THIS TOGETHER!)

YOU'RE JUST IN TIME! WE WERE ABOUT TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO TODAY!

WHAT'S THAT? YOU THINK WE SHOULD SPIN THE WHEEL? THAT'S A GREAT IDEA! WHENEVER I NEED SOME GOOD ADVICE, I ALWAYS LIKE TO SPIN THE WHEEL TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO! YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG WITH IT!

(I'M NOT HEARING VOICES BY THE WAY! I'M GIVING THE AUDIENCE A CHANCE TO GIVE THE RIGHT ANSWER BECAUSE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO THAT IN THIS KIND OF SHOW.)

LOOKS LIKE WE'RE GOING TO BE BAKING TODAY! WE CAN BAKE A... SUPER SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP CAKE? YEAH, THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT. COME ON FLAMBÉ, LET'S HEAD TO THE KITCHEN!

"..."

(GUESS I WON'T BE USING ALL THOSE PROPS I BOUGHT FOR ANY OF THE OTHER OPTIONS. I MISS HAVING A MAGICAL WHEEL THAT BENT REALITY IN INCOMPREHENSIBLE WAYS, THAT WAS SO MUCH MORE CONVENIENT!)

C3-3.png

OKAAAAY, LOOKS LIKE I HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED FOR OUR SPECIAL FRIENDLY SUPER CAKE OR WHATEVER I CALLED IT THE FIRST TIME. FLOUR, SUGAR, BUTTER, EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF FROSTING, A CHEF'S HAT- WAIT A MINUTE, WHERE'S THE EGGS? OH NO, I MUST HAVE FORGOTTEN THEM.

OH, YOU'RE RIGHT! THEY'RE BACK THERE! THANKS, FRIEND.

(JUST SO YOU KNOW, I'M NOT A TOTAL IMBECILE WHO CAN'T FIND THINGS IN PLAIN SIGHT! I'M JUST ACTING!)

NOW ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS BAKE IT AND WAIT! SO I'LL JUST TOSS EVERYTHING IN THE BOWL AND STICK IT IN THE OVEN! REMEMBER, ONLY ADULTS SHOULD DO THIS!

IN THE MEANTIME... UM...

(WELL I DIDN'T ACTUALLY THINK OF ANYTHING TO DO IF I HAD TO STALL FOR TIME! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO, SING SOME STUPID BAKING SONG? NOT GONNA HAPPEN! SEE, I GUESS THIS IS THE PART WHERE ON THE REAL SHOW I COULD DO SOME TRICKS WITH THE FLAMINGO OR SOMETHING. MORE INCENTIVE FOR YOU TO BUY ONE FOR ME!

ANYWAY, I'M JUST GOING TO PAUSE THE RECORDING AND COME BACK WHEN THE CAKE IS DONE.)

C3-4.png

OH.

THIS IS...

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS IS.

(I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO BAKE! HANG ON, I CAN SALVAGE THIS!)

I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED NOW! I FORGOT TO FOLLOW A RECIPE! HOW SILLY OF ME. LET THAT BE A LESSON TO YOU - YOU SHOULD ALWAYS REMEMBER TO READ AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS WHEN PERFORMING TASKS! THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT. WOULDN'T WANT TO ACCIDENTALLY COMMIT YOUR FORBIDDEN ACTION BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T READ! WHAT? FORGET I JUST SAID THAT.

WELL, I THINK I'M GOING TO WRITE TODAY OFF AS A LOST CAUSE AND GO WATCH TV WITH FLAMBÉ. SOUND GOOD?

"..."

OKAY, GREAT. THANKS FOR STOPPING BY FRIEND, HOPEFULLY I'LL SEE YOU AGAIN SOON!

(WOW I THINK ANY PRIDE I MAY HAVE STILL HAD IS DEAD)

Meanwhile in an MKBC boardroom...

"Well. That was something."

"I don't think this guy is a very good role model for kids. Plus he gives me the creeps."

"I mean... It isn't like anything of value would be lost if we don't greenlight this..."

"Alright, in the bin it goes. Now then, how about that drama series that's set in Rogueport?"

"Oh yeah, I like that one. Let's do that instead."

"Great, great. I'll go talk to the PR guys, we'll get a press release so we can send it over to Quizmelon to put in TV Tomorrow."

Hi. I'm Shmaisy.

You know how when you move to a new town, everything's different and it takes a while to adjust yourself to your new surroundings? Yeah, well, that goes a thousandfold when you move... dimensions? Worlds? Realities? I'm not sure what the "proper" term for it is. It's all the same to me.

Maybe it was a mistake. In hindsight, it was a pretty impulsive decision. For now, I was sticking with it, but for all the time I'd spent here already, I couldn't quite wrap my head around things. It didn't really faze me much anymore - having an encounter with a sentient banana trying to collapse all known realities kind of numbs you to everything else - but my best understanding was that this place was... What's the phrase they use around here? "Swoop droppings insane"? We have something similar where I'm from, but the language involved isn't the most polite and I'm trying to maintain a particular image for myself.

At the moment, I was crashing with a man by the name of Shmwario. I guess he's supposed to be a detective, but as far as that trade goes, it seems like his little brother is the actually competent one between the two of them. He's pretty crass, kind of messy, and not the brightest bulb, to be completely honest, but he means well. Today he said he had some bright idea that would help me learn more about the local culture, and then ran off.

Why he needed to do that today, I don't have a clue. It's raining cats and dogs.

I stared out the window as the rain poured down onto the city streets. Finally, he returned a couple hours later, carrying several boxes.

"Alright Shmaisy, Shmwario's got you covered!" he announced, setting the boxes on the floor and haphazardly throwing his soaking wet hat and trenchcoat onto a coat hanger. "I got some great stuff from last year's Awards ceremony that'll really show ya how we do things around here!"

His brother Shmaluigi was here too. He'd been invited over for the "big event", but he seemed pretty surprised that Shmwario managed to get this. "The Awards Committee let you borrow their stuff?" he asked.

"Well, I used your name for the request. It's got more cred."

"Oh, great..."

I had already waited long enough for whatever this was, I didn't want to drag things out with sibling bickering. "Alright, let's get on with it then."

C10-1.png

The two of us sat down on the couch as he started to rummage through one of the boxes. The first thing he pulled out was... a ratty old platypus costume. I wasn't too impressed. "A platypus costume?"

"PERRY the platypus costume?!" Shmwario gasped in shock, seemingly taking a moment to register what he was looking at.

Shmaluigi seemed equally disgusted by the presence of this thing. "Put that thing back where it came from or so help me-"

I had heavy doubts that it was that platypus costume, but old traumas die hard. Still, if everything was this level of quality, I had my doubts that this would be a very enlightening experience. "You're not off to a promising start here."

"Hang on, hang on, there's more in the box!" Shmwario protested.

C10-2.png

The next thing he pulled out was a CD. The case was blank, except for a sticky note that read "Play this during F2 -Zange". "Oh yeah, here's something real good! 'The Worst Enemies (These Guys Suck, They're So Bad)', man, what a mouthful. Good song, though."

"Nice to see the Awards Committee still using physical media," Shmaluigi added. I guess he was something of an old soul.

Shmwario got up and inserted the CD into a player that had seen better days. I was actually pretty impressed, especially after the poor first showing from this box. It was a peppy tune, a little modern for my own personal tastes, but you have to recognize quality work when you see it, you know? "Okay, this is actually pretty good."

"See, what did I tell ya!" Shmwario said with a grin.

That being said, the song's lyrics left me with a lot more questions than answers. "So... why does everyone hate these Hammer Bros. anyway?" I asked.

Shmwario scratched his head in thought, but came up with nothing. "I dunno. Maybe I oughta investigate that!"

"I'll leave that one to you," Shmaluigi said. "I have better things to do with my time."

C10-3.png

Next up was a DVD in another blank case, this time labeled with a sticky note that said "C10 TOP 10 LIFEHACKS @MCDLIFEHACKS". Shmwario put it in his DVD player and, well, these were weird. Like, drinking liquid you found inside of a mystery orb you found weird. That sounds more like a quick trip to the hospital than a life hack. And using a hot dog as a paintbrush? How was any of this practical?

"I don't get these-" I started to say, then it came up with one about hollowing out an old fruitcake and turning it into a lamp. "Okay, that one was kind of cool, actually."

The last one was filling an explosive with cereal and hooking it up to your alarm clock, so it splatters cereal all over your room in the morning. I was really questioning if the rodent guy in this video was okay, but Shmwario seemed to like it. "I'm gonna have to try that one! That's real genius!"

"Looks messy to me," Shmaluigi replied.

Shmwario put a hand to his chin in thought. "Well, yeah, but if you eat the mess then it's not really a problem anymore, right?"

If you ask me, anyone who thinks licking breakfast off the walls is a good idea needs some serious help. "We really need to talk about your hygiene sometime."

"Not right now, I got more stuff to show you!" Conversation dodger.

C10-4.png

The next thing he took out was some official-looking papers. He took a closer look, then seemed equal parts disappointed and concerned. "Wait a minute, these are just old Koopa Troop proposals..."

"What? How did the Committee even get these?" Shmaluigi asked, leaning over the edge of the couch for a closer look.

"So your award show presenters are also committing espionage?" I asked. "I have to admire the commitment, if not the self-preservation."

"I'm just gonna pretend I never saw these," Shmwario said, stuffing them back into the box and digging for something else.

C10-5.png

Shmwario bounced back from that with a photo album full of people in costumes. "Check this out! Some kind of wacky costume party, or something."

I had to say, this was some high-effort stuff, not just your run-of-the-mill trick-or-treaters or whatever. High-quality wardrobe, makeup, even prosthetics, if I had to guess. I loved the hair on that one mushroom girl. You rock that style!

"These are nuts, I can't imagine what you guys do for Halloween. Should I be expecting the costume of the century from you?" I asked Shmwario.

"Naaaah, these are way too high effort for me," Shmwario replied.

"Yeah, you were always more of the type to go to the costume store last minute and throw on a mask," Shmaluigi added.

Shmwario turned to him with a discontented look on his face. "You say that like it's a bad thing!"

C10-6.png

Next, he pulled out a bunch of papers that seemed pretty old for apparently being so new. Shmaluigi picked up on it pretty quick. "I thought you said this stuff was from last year, these look old..."

"Yeah, this is just touched-up old stuff," Shmwario said, taking a closer inspection. "Look, this one's got a 2011 date on it!"

"You really got the cream of the crop, didn't you?" I said sarcastically.

"Hey, I asked for some of their best stuff!" he replied defensively. "I guess people liked it?"

C10-7.png

The last thing in the box was another DVD, labeled M2. "Oh yeah, check this one out! The Favorite Major Character presentation!" Shmwario said with excitement.

Favorite Major Character? I wasn't really sure what that was supposed to mean. "That sounds weird. What determines who's a "major character" anyway?"

"Pain and suffering," Shmaluigi said, very matter-of-fact. Both Shmwario and I looked at him funny for that comment. "What? I read the meeting logs."

"Let's just watch the thing!" Shmwario said, getting up and putting it in the DVD player.

I watched the two people in the video as they rattled off the results of the award - a woman in an ornate orange dress and a lanky guy decked out in a purple suit. But there was something odd... "Hey, is it just me, or does something seem really familiar about those two presenters?"

It was silent for a moment before Shmaluigi chimed in with an answer. "...Nope."

"Okay, hang on, I got one more box!" Shmwario announced, getting up off the couch to retrieve the other box.

C10-8.png

He returned and casually emptied its contents onto the table in front of us.

"It's... just license plates?" I asked in disbelief.

"Yeah! Aren't they great?" he beamed. "I oughta pick one of these for my next Shmwario Car."

"Um... These all came with rejection letters," Shmaluigi pointed out, pulling a piece of paper from the pile.

"What?!"

Truth be told, this whole experience was mostly interesting, but not the least been enlightening. "I think I'm more confused than when we started."

Shmwario's next statement, however, transcended perhaps all universal barriers. "And I think I hate the DMV."

MelonyNadire.png

The 'Shroom HQ. Look past the elegant topiaries, the aged brickwork, and the spacious atrium, and the building may appear as unremarkable as any other. A monument to modern management and the boundless productivity of man, day-to-day, it houses within its esteemed walls no more than journalists clacking away at keyboards for untold hours to hurry their completed articles to the ever-churning printing presses. No surprise could lurk under the harsh fluorescent lights buzzing above the heads of harried copy-editors. No, to even humor the thought is absurd.

That which exists between fear and memory lies below. In the depths of the HQ's sprawling basement, time weaves, upon musty boxes brimming with stacks of yellowed papers, a coat of dust and cobwebs. Down here, betwixt the light of dying incandescent filaments and shadow, lay a place erected upon the foundation of humankind's anxious recollections. It is an area we call…

…the Twilight Town Zone.

In entering, we divest ourselves of all that which we think we understand, the comprehension we have gained through the instruction of our senses in the world of the familiar. Those of you who have even the dimmest desires to decipher the meaning of these woesome tales must be prepared to discard all you believe yourself to know about temporality. In this unusual space, the axis of time presents no more resistance to its traversal than do the axes of space.

Permit that we might walk down this axis, and enter into this scene one overworked Sub-Director. This is Superchao, and those papers before him? An application packet for a brand-new section. You see, Mr. Superchao has it in mind to compile the most comprehensive repository of information on the greatest competitors in the galaxy's brutish, high-speed F-Zero Grand Prix races. For a sport so poorly-documented, with available information riddled with inaccuracies and yet more locked behind language barriers, such a repository could be revolutionary. But this new periodical column is not the only idea that this beleaguered Sub-Director countenances. Tucked away in the fine print of this application packet is a proposal suggesting readers will vote on the order in which he covers racers. The ramifications of this decision are not yet known to him. They will be yours and his to discover in this tale of Mach Speed Mayhem.

Before you set out on your journey with Mr. Superchao, we invite you to walk further along the axis of time, joining us in winding back the gears of the clock to a period before even the construction of The 'Shroom HQ. Unfolding the newspaper as his breakfast table, a young man rifles through to the funny pages, searching the collection of inked comics with honed precision - only to find that something is out of place. A handful of the comics which have greeted Mr. winstein in the past no longer inhabit their typical positions on the page, replaced by new comics - Pickles and Zits. His gaze falls upon these comics, a mind already familiar with the ways of the industry scrutinizing that which has been Drawn & Pressed upon this newspage. Little does he know what will come of his appreciation of this medium in the far future. With well-researched, well-laid out articles with detailed comic and author backgrounds, personal anecdotes, and curated galleries of selected editions, someday he will pass this knowledge and appreciation to others. But at this moment, in this time, in this place, he is only a reader.

Now we retread the path we have walked thus far to arrive in a kitchen. The dog days of summer have descended across the land. An oppressive heat smothers merrymakers. In these grueling days, within this kitchen, a chef concocts an idea for a frozen treat made from, among other ingredients, Double Cherries. Mr. TPG's misadventures as a freelance chef and at The Perfect Grill alike have been accompanied thus far by humorous illustrations, creative unanticipated follies, and even the occasional continuity nod. As a diversion from your own wearying woes, we present to you the opportunity to sit in on this aspiring chef's tale as he seeks to create the perfect Cooking Guide for this sweet, icy refreshment.

We leave you to join, in the depths of memory, these three distinguished journalists-to-be. Though you cannot interfere in their tales, by studying them, you may yet discover some joy in returning to their stories, a feat made only possible by the loose laws of this unusual realm, the place we call… The Twilight Town Zone.

The NEW Scribble Format where everyone wins!

Introducing Scribble Royale, a very real game and evolution of the classic Scribble format. This Rougelite game sees you travelling through the Kingdom of Scribbles, facing off against opponents and getting stronger, all in a bid to face off and defeat a procedurally generated Godhead Scribbler!

You'll start off weak, with just a 40x40 pixel canvas and two colours - black and white, and will have to Scribble in special 1v1s against waves of foes. Each opponent you defeat, however, will grant you a Scribble Card, with its own unique ability! They may give you a new colour to play with, or a new artstyle to use, or even bonus effects for your canvas! Watch out, the possibilities are untested and very much limitless. Build your Scribble deck using the skills you earn in combat, and ascend to the top!

TmlfK5L.png

The currently known 'Creative Maximum' granted by an endgame Scribble Deck build. This included +20 colours, +4 months drawing time, +Real Life references, +Dithering Bonus, and +Fabric Depiction: Mastery.

Issue 200 of The 'Shroom is, in my opinion, one of the greatest achievements in the history of the wiki and its community, featuring the efforts of countless members across years of history and growth.

Though it is the product of its numerous contributors, I would like to dedicate this presentation and its award to the two heralds who, as Director and Sub-Director, spearheaded and perfected this very, VERY special issue of a fun little newspaper.

Hooded Pitohui. Waluigi Time.

May the stars in our fireworks always shine in your honour.

Up next is the Community Awards XVII closing by Hooded Pitohui!

ShroomArchivesBanner200.png

With those offerings from AC Hubbub, we wrap up the Community Awards XVII. Not unlike this past year, that was a pretty packed ceremony, eh? A whole collection of wonderful presenters, a dedicated Clown Car crew, and the rest of the Awards Committee worked hard to bring this ceremony to you, so please give them a round of applause. Then, give yourself a big round of applause! After all, there wouldn't be Community Awards if all of you hadn't spent a year creating so much worth celebrating!

Every last one of you who has worked to make this community such a comfortable, innovative, and just plain fun space, we thank you! Whether you join us for Awards, make a presentation, write for The 'Shroom, make and host games, share your art, or even just show up to chat, you are what makes this community a place worth celebrating.

Now, the Community Awards may be drawing to a close, but this day of celebration is still young! We have plenty of festivities left, and the Fail Awards are coming up soon, so get your Melee voice clips ready.

We're going to have another jam-packed year and meet right back here to celebrate all of it in the 18th Community Awards. Until then, stay tuned for the rest of the show!
