Well Mario Boards, we made it, despite your directions.

That's right, another Mario Awards ceremony is upon us! So far today, we've seen all sorts of creative and inspiring presentations made by our community members. If you're worried about the momentum letting up: don't be! With twenty more awards to present, alongside our annual Bloopers and Bonus Stars, this show just keeps on rolling! There's a plethora of treats still awaiting you, so please, prepare your palates!

To speak personally, this year's Awards Ceremonies are arriving at a challenging time for myself. It might be true that you are facing your own struggles and uncertainties in this moment. What I adore about this community are days like today, in light of those hardships. Here we all are, from all different corners of the maps, pursuing different interests and paths, at different moments in our lives... And still, we can collectively come together, put in some hard work, and produce what is truly a wonderful day of celebration and whimsy. The day of the Awards Ceremony exemplifies what this community is all about at its core: a bunch of people who care a lot, creating something together. To all of you who have endured the troubles and still joined with us today: thank you. I'm honored to have you here.

Fuller thank you's will follow at the end of our ceremony, but I don't want to keep you wrapped up too long - we've got a funny plumber man to celebrate! You'll be hearing from me again after our last Bonus Stars presentation of the night. For now, please carry all of my best regards, and enjoy all that this community has crafted for you.

Pull the curtain! It's time to start the show!

M7 - Favorite Soundtrack: Meta Knight

It's no secret that out of the dozens upon dozens of Mario games out there, quite a few of them have memorable music scattered throughout. Of course, only one can reign supreme for this Mario Awards Ceremony, so I arranged a rock-and-roll medley highlighting the tunes featured in the top result.

So sit back, relax and listen to the greatest soundtrack in all of Mario!

This was compiled in Guitar Pro 8, with much of the work borrowed from the respective tracks on ninsheetmusic.org. Thanks to those, transcribing was not a nightmare. I would have loved to have taken the transcript and performed it with instruments, and I did actually record quite a lot, but sadly my chops are not up to the standards I was looking for with this. Not to mention, I don't know the first thing about audio mixing. With both the deadline approaching and my free time/discipline dwindling, what you're listening to is the result of me messing with the different plugins found in Guitar Pro. Hopefully you enjoy it even if the end result is not as "authentic" as I would have hoped.

If you would like to download the tabs/sheet music for your own instrumental journey, you can do so
here.

M6. Favorite In-game Track
by Zange

Hello, this is Zange. I decided to try something a bit different musically this year. Originally I wanted to create a complete acapella version of the song that won this award... but I figured out very quickly that I am physically incapable of hitting some of the notes in sequence that this song requires (especially because there's a lot of eighth or sixteenth notes going rapidly up and down scales here... no thanks)

So instead I created a half acapella half synth version. I even set it up so that the acapella is more dominant on the right side and the synth is more dominant on the left, but you're still able to hear both parts in both ears.

Please enjoy ^^

Since its inception, the Super Mario series has been host to several incredible platforming games. From older games like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, to newer, experimental entries such as the Mario Maker games, there's a great variety of amazing platformers, each with their own unique style and mechanics. Seeing the top 3 winners this year, I decided to try something a little experimental to see what it would be like to take something from the winning entry and try putting it into another style. So, using the 3rd place winner, Super Mario Maker 2 and the style of 2nd place winner, Super Mario World, I took one of the most iconic levels from the 1st place winner, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and remade it as faithfully as I was able to with the tools I had to work with. I found it not only to be a fun experiment to tweak things to make it work within the limitations I was under, but it also really brought home the added layers of complexity, detail and unique game mechanics that Wonder brought to the table. I hope you enjoy seeing the differences between the original level and my recreation, and that the comparison will help you appreciate just how nice the design work in Wonder is.

Note: For those who own the game, it is encouraged that you experience this level for yourself with a blind playthrough. For those who cannot do this due to not having the game, or who just really don't want to play it, I have attached a video version, hidden in the spoiler below.

Congratulations to Super Mario Bros. Wonder for taking home the gold in its first year at the awards!

On the origins of the white-spotted chomper plant
Kooderich, 2024

You may be familiar with them—be it from photographs in travel magazines or nature documentaries, excursions into the pipe yards or through questionable sewer spelunking activities. The white-spotted chomper plant, Tulipa Dentata, or—as it is more colloquially known—the Common Piranha Plant is a genus of carnivorous plant that is easily identifyable by its striking crimson color, white flecks, bulbous lips, and gleaming sharp "teeth". It is a ubiquitous, hardy growth that makes its home in a wide variety of places, regardless of local environmental factors like climate or ready access to water. Within its numerous habitats it has been observed to prefer tight places with little exposure to light, such as crevasses, cavern alcoves, and perhaps most commonly, pipes. This particular plumbing-related preference has made it into a prolific predator of especially sewer maintenance workers.

Very little is known about this species of vegetation, not least because of the many hazards associated with getting a live sample. To date, only three specimen are alive in captivity, and one of them may just be a basketball with squiggly teeth drawn onto it in felt pen (a surveyor willing to approach the specimen to confirm this has yet to be located). As one can imagine, this makes proper study rather diffcult. But I aim to delve deeper into this subject today than any of my colleagues have ever dared, in search of understanding.

plant1.png

Just one example of my rigorous preparations.

Physiology

The plant consists of a bulbous growth with a slit-like opening that can open and close like an animal's mouth. The rim of this opening starts out smooth during sprouting, but starts to swell as the plant matures, giving it an appearance not unlike that of a pair of human lips. Just behind those lips lies the plants characteristic row of "teeth". It should be noted that these are not real teeth, as plants generally lack the ability to produce dental enamel. These structures are actually constructed from stem tissue, meaning it is more accurate to refer to them as highly specialised thorns. The rest of the head is dedicated to a large cavity that is capable of secreting digestive fluids and thus functions as a sort of makeshift stomach.

plant2.png

At the bottom end of the plant lies the root section. You can really see how little was understood of these entities by researchers of the past, as calling this a "root" is another misnomer. This part has very little in common with conventional plant roots, as it lacks any ability to absorb water. In fact, all nourishment the plant requires is acquired and processed by the head alone. The "root", as well as the long, wriggly stem connecting it to the head, merely serves to assist the plant's unusually developed locomotive functions. This locomotion is achieved through specially grown strands of fiber that contract and expand selectively—much like muscles—allowing the plant to turn its head and even walk.

Diet and hunting strategy

The primary prey of this predatory flower is understood to be "imbeciles who go spelunking in pipes", a fact which has been corroborated by studies in areas with high quantities of adventurous, but slightly dim-witted individuals. When the plant senses a potential mark approaching, it conceals itself just beyond the mouth of a pipe or other opening and then lunges out as the target passes by. How the plant is able to sense the presence of a person is unknown, but it is my thesis that the plant head contains olfactory receptors able to discern scents, specifically the smell of sweat. This is supported by observations of the plant remaining in hiding when especially strong noxious odors are present (like a plumber standing directly next to the pipe the plant is occupying). It is therefore advisable to unclog a toilet with your hand before handling a piranha plant, as the resulting aroma will render the subject inert (Kooderich method, patent outstanding).

(Picture reference missing)

Once the piranha plant strikes, it sinks its tooth-like thorns into the victim and, depending on its size, either tears a chunk out of it or devours it whole. In the latter case, the plant's lip-like growths allow the digestive cavity to form an air-tight seal around the victim, ensuring death via suffocation within about a minute. The cavity will then begin to secrete enzymes from its inner lining, dissolving flesh into a nutrient-rich slurry that is quickly absorbed and distributed throughout the plant body. The plant acquires almost all it needs to live this way, including water from blood and other fluids.

Like most examples of flora, the Piranha Plant conducts photosynthesis to break down the nutrients it receives, but how exactly it does so when it predominantly lives in areas with little light exposure is unknown. A pervasive and credible theory by me is that it uses the glare from subterranean coins as a substitute for light, much like a person can use coins as a substitute for oxygen by collecting them underwater. This makes unreasonably affluent plumbers an ideal source of nourishment for this creature.

History

The first documented case of a person encountering Tulipa Dentata happened in 1988. While there are eye witness accounts claiming to have seen "toothed killer plants" dating back as early as 1985, these sightings have been linked to a phenomenon taking place during the Brick War, wherein a genus of murderous green plant automatons was created via the discredited practice of "dark magic". However, these man-made creatures are not true Piranha Plants, and those accounts can thus be safely dismissed wholesale.

Dried cuttings found in the Flower Kingdom,
containing possible samples of ancient Piranha plants.

Nobody really knows how or when Piranha Plants came to be in their contemporary shape, and very little research has been conducted within that subject, as I already stated. I myself could only find a single study on the matter, penned by a certain Kolorado, Professor of Archaeology, in 1999. Said study claims these plants were the result of an elderly man eating a watermelon on his porch and getting seeds stuck in his dentures, which subsequently ruined the implement beyond repair. Distraught over his mistake, the man—whose name eludes the esteemed Professor of course—allegedly then buried the dentures in the ground, where the seeds sprouted and fused with the tooth fixture into the hungry plant we know today.

That this is utter nonsense is something I hope dearly needs no elaboration. Perhaps the dear Professor ought to bury his work in the ground next and check whether it will grow into a fallacious shrub, or in lieu of that at least keep to his own field of alleged expertise and spare the rest of us his harebrained hypotheses.

As it stands, there is cause for hope that the remaining mysteries of these fascinating creatures will soon be unlocked, owing to recent discoveries made within the distant Flower Kingdom. I have already requested funding for an expedition there and, the scientific committee be willing, aim to facilitate the creation of a study penned by someone who isn't an imbecilic charlatan with too much credit. Not that I am referring to anyone in particular.

I'd like to give Roserade a hand for coming up with the concept of this presentation. The execution may be mine, but the idea truly belongs to them.

Alright everyone, listen up. We have a busy cycle, so I'm not going to be repeating your assignments. Pay attention when your squad is called, I don't want to find anyone wandering the halls trying to figure out what they were supposed to be doing after the meeting.

Bronze Squadron, you're heading to the Wii sector. The kart races there are still as popular as ever, but they've been having a wi-fi outage for... the past ten years. So, yeah. That's going to need to be fixed. I know, I know, the Galaxy Corps don't usually deal with IT, but this is a special case. Also, recent intel says that there was a dispute over the name of local livestock, so try not to get tangled up in that mess if you can help it. I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

Silver Squadron, you're being deployed out to the Rogueport galaxy. Things aren't pretty out there, so we'll be sending you in the fleet's most fortified vessels and fully stocked with state-of-the-art weaponry, of course. Our data shows that there's been an uptick in criminal activity in the galaxy, and apparently there's a new organization out there trying to get their hands on some ancient treasure left behind after a cataclysmic event. Geological data confirms something did happen to leave the capital planet uninhabitable for a time, but those events far predate intergalactic travel, so the Galaxy Corps don't have any reliable information on the specifics. You'll have to talk to the locals to find out more. Whatever's going on, it can't be good.

Finally, Gold Squadron. This is an important one, so you'll be coming with me. The Comet Observatory has been attacked, and its entire supply of Power Stars was stolen in the process. No doubt that they've been scattered all across the nearby systems, and I expect that none of you should need a briefing on how important Power Stars are by now. We're also detecting some anomalous fluctuations in energy signatures coming from unknown space, which could very well be related. We have to work fast on this one.

Alright, that's all for the briefing. Everyone be at your transports in five minutes.
