So what's wrong with King K. Rool in NS1 era?

I know I've mentioned in quite many posts but this is yet another time to bring it up since NS1 era has been confirmed to make an end.

Like..... what's the point of Nintendo and Miyamoto pushing KRool for Smash out of the blue? Ignore my personal bias for the character, this feels totally illogical in Nintendo's viewpoint. Since they want to push new Fire Emblem games so hard, it would had made better sense to push other DKC characters who had more recent main roles (especially in Tropical Freeze) as Smash fighters for better advertising.

Otherwise the fact Miyamoto and Nintendo keep ignoring KRool in all the following plans just makes zero sense. If they think KRool has nothing to do with new games, that means he isn't really a feasible choice for a Smash fighter.

Of course, based on both popularity and historical importance, he definitely deserves both the Smash invite and more game appearances. I don't think things would suddenly turn good but really hope that NS2 era is his time.

I heard rumors that it's a license issue.. otherwise I don't see why he doesn't come back to DK titles

it's fun to imagine miyamoto as a shadowy evil vizier who whispers advice to sakurai like "put king k. rool in smash, we need to give dk fans a glimmer of hope before crushing it. also we need sales for the full-price dark moon port in a few years so give luigi his vacuum cleaner"

That's why we're all playing all those hot R.O.B titles right?

Pretty sure he did this with the Paper Mario series too.

There's nothing wrong with King K. Rool. The fact that King K. Rool is a Smash fighter is already the most glorious position a video game character can be. Relatively lesser-known characters are considerably more popular than the prominent characters in their home series, like how Incineroar is now more popular than the other Alola first partner Pokemon who gets more promotion in the home series (Rowlet/Decidueye). Min-Min is also probably more popular than Spring Man/Ribbon Girl, even though the latter were the first two characters promoted for the series and one is even basically the main character. Not to mention that because of playable Ice Climbers, there is fan interest for a new Ice Climber game (even though it's a relatively weaker Famicom/NES game) shows how much Smash elevates the station of a character.

All of this is to say that King K. Rool is fine. Would it be all right if King K. Rool gets another appearance in a Mario game? Certainly. But as it stands, he's pretty popular because of Smash.

Thank you for reading.

If license issue exists it'd be applied to the whole franchise and its characters for sure, not KRool specifically.

Wait I'm confused; why would it be a licensing issue? King K. Rool was created by Nintendo just like the Super Mario characters were, right? Doesn't he technically belong to Nintendo? Or does the license belong to Rare? I'm sorry; I have no idea how licensing and trademarks and all that works.

Is there an easily searchable database somewhere that shows who holds the licenses to certain trademarks/characters? That would be useful, because it seems that there is a lot of confusion when topics like this show up online, and people don't end up referencing anything more substantial than the idea of "rumors".

Wait, I should have at least tried at least a basic search to see if something like that exists myself before asking the question to everyone here. I'm sorry.

The best I can find is https://copyright.gov/public-records/ but it doesn't seem to be easily searchable for the purposes of figuring out who owns a character. I'm still interested if anyone has any more information.

@Waluigi Time Yeah that's what I thought; when people said there was a licensing issue because of that (knowing already Nintendo owns Donkey Kong and all its characters) in my head I was literally like "Huh?".

Based on popularity I assume KRool does win over some from the recent rosters.

If Smash entry relies alot on popularity, KRool's popularity is definitely big.
