I guess they might add more third-party, well, non-Mario characters like Zelda and Kirby. I'd rather they didn't personally, as then it's less purely Mario Kart but it wouldn't surprise me. I wish they'd add Count Bleck and Dimentio but that'll never happen.
 
Foreman Spike is a good one. But if I were to suggest, then I think some of the Mario family that are introduced in the Mario movie would be fun to see, especially the Papa.

I legit think outright 3rd party characters like Sonic actually do have a decent chance this time around; in Sonic's case he had a Mii costume in 8 and 8 Deluxe plus he would fit in very nicely with his new upcoming racing game and it doesn't seem too hard to actually get him into Nintendo properties these days, especially since the Mario & Sonic license ended. I legit think maybe they would skip first party Nintendo properties and go straight for that, that's kinda the nature of these guest characters as they don't typically stick around for more than one game, as Soul Calibur pulled off.
 
If they wanna put Sonic into a Mario Kart game, then I would then demand Mario be put into a Sonic Racers game.

If they put Sonic in a Mario game I want Spyro to be put in it too LOL. Or at least have him be in Smash. Please, Nintendo, a lot of people love Spyro; please put him in Smash! People have been requesting it, too.
 
Anything would be good as long as it's not Illumination Minion. And given Nintendo's future collaborations with Illumination and how they made DK look like the movie DK, it's definitely possible, unfortunately. My guesses for the next filler characters (not already showcased) are Purple Platinum Waluigi, Gooigi, and Baby Pauline. My prediction is Cranky Kong (it'd just make sense). My desire is Ninji (my second favorite Mario character). One that probably won't happen but would surprise everyone and be very interesting (and wild) would be Jr.'s mother.

People joke about variants of Pink Gold Peach and Baby Rosalina but they deliberately chose those characters because they want to appeal to young and female players. I think with the return of all the babies and with Pauline in the mix, I think the is pretty diverse enough and I don't think we'll be getting a metal or another baby variant.

I'll eat crow if they do decide to announce another baby or metal though.
 
I know that miis are considered vestigial features at this point by Nintendo, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were dropped, but I hope to see them stick around for the new Mario Kart.

Maybe next time they can have more varied costume options, I didn't like that they were forced to wear bulky helmets at all times in 8 when none of the other characters had to.

I think they're the case that they fit in backstory but not on the stage, unless Nintendo prove us wrong. They would need their own position for major regulars.

Honestly, I personally think WarioWare and RPG characters aren't bad picks in of themselves (if I had to pick a WarioWare character, 9-Volt all the way) but Nintendo treats those series as completely separate IPs hence why they generally stay within their little subseries with barely any cross...."contamination" with each other. Only a few series has little nods to series outside them, and it's usually the bigger series get referenced in the smaller ones, not the other way around (like in Mario RPGs, kart and tennis get referenced or kart getting referenced in item battle in Mario Tennis).

Though since Luigi's Mansion and the Poltergust make regular appearances in Mario Kart, I legit think E. Gadd is way long overdue to be playable; had he not been scrapped in DS, I think he could have been a regular playable character by this point. He should have been a driver in Tour at the very least, they got fucking Poochy in that game as playable.

Okay ngl the movie Mario parents as newcomers would be very epic picks and I would 100% back them.
 
Knowing Nintendo, it will most likely stick with its own property, which has been evidenced with MK8 and MK8DX; all the guest characters came from franchises that Nintendo has the full rights to.

Not counting Miis, that would add up to 50 playable characters, excluding palette swaps (such as Gold Mario being an alternate Metal Mario palette). And in terms of cuts, the guest characters (Link, Villager (male and female), Isabelle, Inkling Girl, and Inkling Boy), Tanooki Mario, and Cat Peach would all be on the chopping block.
 
I noticed you put Wiggler here but how would a Wiggler even fit in a kart? They're extremely long. Unless Nintendo uses a really small one in Mariokart, which would make sense.

Just look at how MK7 and MK8DX were both able to get Wiggler to work. And curiously, the one in MK8DX is medium-sized, despite of its long body.

Oh yeah I never unlocked the Wiggler kart in Mariokart 7 and haven't played Mario Kart 8 yet so I literally haven't ever seen that LOL. That's why I was curious about it.

That's a very solid roster and something I'd probably bank on. It's not stuffed to the brim with too many generic enemies and it has a nice mix of newcomers and returning characters.

Honey Queen seriously got shafted in terms of returning characters and her negative reception for in Mario Kart 7 isn't even her fault, it's because of the cut characters. She's otherwise a very solid, left field choice, a memorable character, from a very popular game that fills the role of a large, super heavyweight female character who is also a nice and gentle character as opposed to the rowdier super heavyweights.

I'd also support a Sprixie Princess being playable, and they have their alts being selectable costumes, though honestly, 3D World is kinda old as opposed to something like Odyssey so I'd want someone like Cappy being there first.

I'd also like Wiggler to return too, very unique and fun character to have around. The turning angry aesthetic gimmick is a neat thing to have.

LOL wonder if Wigglers have high blood pressure all the time because of how angry they get. In the games seems especially easy to piss them off. 🤣
