That doesn't really count, unless the topic was "Hardest Mario Universe game played". Anyway, SMB and SMB:LL were some of the harder Mario titles I've played, mostly due to those Hammer Bros.. Amusingly, the classics tend to be harder than today's games.

Renting Mario's Time Machine for the SNES from the video store when I was eight years old (1998) with no internet search engine. I'm still surprised how good my father was at that game (I pretty much had him beat it for me.)

Super Mario Land. I've always found it terribly hard to play; the physics are... different from other games, and it's hard to see what stuff is without using the Super Game Boy (especially on my cruddy old Game Boy that has a blurry, green screen). The fact that "Superball Mario"'s projectiles don't actually bounce along the ground like the fireballs in other games but fly upwards after hitting the ground directly in front of his feet doesn't help either. And to think the game has a "hard mode"; as if there was any need to make it even harder.
