Hey guys, here's the full list of movies I watched in 2024 ranked, with some pretty great and pretty bad movies. And to be honest a lot of okay ones.

I will give a brief rationale for my Top 5 and Bottom 5.
5th Best: Freaky Friday (1976)- I thought this was a funny movie, I liked seeing how the mother and son deal with how annoying each other's life is and there are some fun antics, such as the car climax. It's funny even when it gets awful to watch like how Annabel acts towards the guy she has a crush on when looking like her mom.
4th Best: Inside Out 2- Some fun new emotions but Anxiety especially stole the show with her constant desire to cut corners with fear for Riley, and the conflict about becoming overcome with fear wanting to impress people while you know them resonated with me.
3rd Best: Klaus- Seeing how the town changed and how the main character changed while changing the town has a lot of heart and fun, I like Santa's role here, and the animation perfectly complements the cartoony but with beauty feel.
2nd Best: The Wild Robot- Beautiful nature animation, great growth in relationships between characters, and a lot of heart as it is good it fully takes itself seriously when it needs to but still is fun. This movie's world feels immersive and even one part of it feels like a whole movie, so it's even better as a whole.
Best: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish- Seeing Puss's arc to gain a new self, with a lot of colorful new characters intertwined into the plot seamlessly, such as Death's intimidating presence, as well as all the twists and turns to the quest in the wish land, give this movie a sense of scale as it is extremely confidently crafted.

5th Worst: Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World- This movie gets some things right, like the new silent bodyguard character being a lot of fun, and some decent suspense in the middle as Ratcliffe's plan to get Pocahontas in trouble is clever. However, how much distaste is put into John Smith's writing especially making him look like a shallow condescending nobody to force certain plot elements felt extremely distasteful, and Pocahontas' role in the plot stopped feeling authentic or fleshed out well by the end.
4th Worst: Lightyear- I originally liked this movie okay because I liked the ideas in the first half of watching everyone slowly age and die, but in retrospect this movie is not good. Most of the human characters could be more interesting and I don't like Moe at all for example, and there are plot holes such as how light speed should have already have changed time drastically at the beginning of the movie.
3rd Worst: Brother Bear 2- This movie is better on a technical level than the previous two movies but its problem is I don't consider it to be interesting at all, still more than with them. I didn't care about whether Nita ended up dating Kenai much as it drops her having personality much at all by the second half, and I don't think the dialogue has an edge at all. The heart here is less interestingly executed than in the first movie, while keeping the first movie's biggest flaw of not being funny, but worse here because it hinged even more on the moose and I don't care for them much at all. The raccoon fight scene was cool but that's about as much interesting there is.
2nd Worst: Atlantis: Milo's Return- Aside from it utilizing some side characters better than in the first movie, and most of the characters didn't feel out of character except that Milo is less interesting here, this movie suffers from subpar animation and awful plot structure as the three stories feel poorly fleshed out and dull, except for a few good moments in the middle story.
Worst: Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken- While the animation has some good elements in this movie, such as that I really like how rooms in the house are designed such as Ruby's room, this is my least favorite movie on the list because it feels the most unoriginal. The plot of a teenage girl gaining powers to become massive with a mom who has a lot of secrets regarding the power and quirky friends and has to deal with liking guys all feels extremely derivative of Turning Red, and that's not the only movie it rips off. As the villain's plan of wanting to use the main character to retrieve an artifact under the sea to gain much more power feels like it's ripping off Morgana's plan in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. While that's also on the list and not particularly high either because it has similar elements to the first movie, what I can at least say about it and Return to Never Land reusing plot elements from the originals is that they are aware that they are doing so as the point making them better, whereas this pretends to be its own thing.

Overall, this 42-movie list was much bigger than the list of movies I watched in 2023 being twice the size. And about the same on average in terms of quality, as the 2023 list had my favorite movie out of both years, Psycho (1960), but movies worse than any movie on the list in 2024, namely Call Me By Your Name and elements of/to a lesser extent Mulan II. However, I still enjoyed this list of movies as a whole. I can also explain or explain further any ranking people are curious about why it placed there.

Only question is does Alice In Wonderland being #7 and Snow White being #9 and Peter Pan being #11 and Sword And The Stone being #16 imply you don't think they are good movies? Because they are; they're Disney classics for a reason, and people really love them. I don't know, I kind of think that you ranking a movie on this list lower than 1, 2, 3 4 or 5 means you think it is worse quality (that lower number indicates decline of quality), but I'm probably wrong as those movies seeing how this chart is laid out are nowhere even close to the bottom of the list. Probably the movies that it is implied you think they are "bad" is lower than the middle of the list and going further down, but I don't know. Also when you say you "still enjoyed this list of movies as a whole" does it mean you enjoyed watching all of them, even the bad ones? Those are the last of my questions about this list.

Also I enjoyed Atlantis Milo's Return but it was vastly inferior to Atlantis The Lost Empire and I remember even as a kid being a little disappointed at first that it wasn't nearly as good as it, but I like it fine now as an adult for some reason. Also one other thing Lightyear was a disappointment for me personally because it departed so much from the original lore behind the character of Buzz Lightyear as discussed in the Toy Story movies and so did not feel like a Toy Story movie and also it being set in a completely different timeline just felt weird. Like, lots of bronies and pegasisters bash MLP G5 (which I happen to like despite its flaws) because it threw a lot of the lore of the original show right out the window but I don't personally care about any of that (with MLP), but with Lightyear, I actually cared about that and so was disappointed. I think if Pixar had stuck to the original lore and had Star Command and featured Buzz Lightyear's teammates and friends from the "Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command" TV series I grew up watching and all that, it would have been a lot better of a movie and been much better received. I remember when I saw the trailer for it being like "OH MY GOD THIS GUY (Buzz Lightyear) WAS MY CHILDHOOD; I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS!" and was absolutely FILLED with nostalgia and then after I watched it I was like "Ugh.....Buzz, what did they do to you?!". Also I think Sox the robot cat and XR (the robotic Space Ranger from Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command) would have really gotten along well. I would have liked to see that. Apparently even Buzz has now become a victim of Disney's sometimes really poor decision-making when it comes to what it does with its franchises.

Also I agree with Sharkboy and Lavagirl being at the bottom of the list because frankly the writing and the special effects with all the Spy Kids movies and their spin-offs really suck LOL. Oliver And Company-I LOVE that movie. It shouldn't have been toward the bottom. Ok. I'm done now.

Thank you for sharing this interesting list with us. Out of these movies, the only ones that I've also watched are (excluding those which I can't remember much about because they were too long ago, such as Snow White or Peter Pan):
  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which I agree with ranking very high
  • Enchanted, which I would say was just decent so I sort of agree with you but might've put it a little lower
  • Lightyear, which I don't agree with ranking it as low as you did but I do agree it wasn't great. It would've been way better if it'd been closer to Toy Story but unlike Miles I never watched "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" so idk about that.
I do want to see Inside Out 2 and Alice in Wonderland so it's cool that you ranked them relatively high. On the other hand, it's a shame that, at least in your opinion, The Little Mermaid 2, Despicable Me 4, and Oliver & Company aren't so good, because those are all movies that I had wanted to see. I probably will still try them at some point though because it's possible I might enjoy them more than you did.

Overall, your list is well presented, well thought out, and you give great explanations for your top 5 and bottom 5. If you have the time and desire - and it's ok if you don't - I was wondering if you could give an explanation behind your rankings for all the movies I mentioned above that weren't covered in your top 5 / bottom 5 (so that would be: Enchanted, Alice in Wonderland, Little Mermaid 2, Despicable Me 4, and Oliver & Company)?

@Zatanna Hey Zatanna, do you actually plan to watch Buzz Lightyear of Star Command at some point? Are you interested If you don't want to pay to watch it on Disney+, there's all the episodes on YouTube and stuff. Of course if you're not interested it's fine, but I'd recommend it if you are; it's really good.

Maybe this summer holidays when I have more free time, sure, but atm I have other things that are higher on my list such as Adventure Time, TAWOG, finishing MLP G5, rewatching original Teen Titans series since it's been almost 4 years, etc

Kronk's New Groove is far too low

@Blitzo I agree. That movie was funny. I remember laughing my head off at that movie when I first saw it on DVD when I was 12.

For your first question each of the four movies you mentioned are good in my book, not just the Top 5 as Alice in Wonderland is a low 8/10 for me, Snow White and Peter Pan are both high 7/10s, and The Sword in the Stone is a low 7/10.

For the latter question I would say that I liked a majority of the movies on the list, so anything through the lower middle, but I don't care for which movies are in the very low territory as they have problems. (Except maybe I could ironically enjoy Sharkboy and Lavagirl despite it having a couple actually good ideas but that's at its spot for its technical quality) By "enjoying the list as a whole" I mean liking the list both due to its average quality as well as its interesting variety of premises. Though I also did find it interesting when there was a less good movie compared to others, to analyze my distinct preferences between movies.

I very much have the desire, as as I mentioned I strongly welcome any questions on why I placed a movie a certain way, but I will give my thoughts when I have the time all in one post on why those movies are at their spots. As each of those five have interesting elements to comment on regarding their quality.

I really need to watch freaky Friday again because I have to watch that again. I haven't watched in a long time I only know Pollyanna from the books and the anime that we watched in elementary school.

@Itsameweegee Freaky Friday is pretty funny. It might not have been the same one on the list because I think the one I watched I don't know might have been a reboot because the daughter of the mom featured in it was a teenager I think but the funniest line I can remember from it is the mom going "You pierced your navel?!". She was mad. 🤣

I should also mention for some of these four that this rating can go two ways between how much they had impact as classics and how much I enjoyed them but I decided to go with the second option. I still like them though.

I should mention, I also just made a list of my favorite and least favorite movies I watched each year for the first half of this decade.
1741576452432.jpeg

The movies on the favorites list and most of the movies on my least favorites list are pretty good and pretty bad respectively, with The Green Mile and Call Me By Your Name reaching the extent of being my favorite and least favorite movie of all time respectively, currently. However, like with the main list in the OP I can explain why each movie on the favorites and least favorites list got their spot from yours truly.

Alice in Wonderland is a movie that is very much constant new chaos but in a way that is fun for all ages, with characters such as the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts especially, but everyone else, being packed with oodles of fun quirks, and the animation is always bonkers and extremely impressive for almost 75 years ago. There's also a fun little character arc for Alice but that doesn't feel too moralizing or overly in the movie, and it focuses on the wacky antics with that as a side note. This movie can be pretty intense too such as in the climax, and it doesn't mind pushing the envelope (in a way that kids can still enjoy, though). Interestingly however I would only recommend this movie more when in a relaxed mood, such as at night, where one can really soak up the carefree outside-the-box feel, as that time and mood were how I watched the movie. When my mother watched it in the middle of working she fell asleep, which makes sense not to be fully invested as one would be too focused on the practical to fully enjoy the abstractions this movie has to offer.

Enchanted is a fun movie as it is quite funny to see the cartoon characters act out in real life, such as the prince. One joke I like is what kind of animals the princess is able to get along with in the real world when singing. It does a decent job making the characters likable and not being too mean-spirited, even the more emotionally detached, heady male protagonist. As well as feeling necessarily well-intentioned, such as that I like how it subverts certain tropes one would expect to see in a princess movie, even a half-parody one, such as especially
that it is a male character who goes through an arc of learning to stand up to a female abuser, when usually you would expect it to be a female character standing up to another female or a male abuser.
Of the two well-placing movies you brought up, this places lower because sometimes the shtick of Giselle not being used to the real world can drag on a bit long, and I felt it had moments where it could have taken the concept of divorce a bit more seriously, but this movie still can be enough to put one in a good mood.

It should be noted that with Oliver and Company and Despicable Me 4, I still would give 6 stars out of 10 to them, so I wouldn't call them bad, but calling them good would be overstating it a bit too. Oliver and Company being the first of these two you mentioned and has some good things about it. "Why Should I Worry" is always a really fun, upbeat classic and maybe even one of my favorite Disney songs. I also like that it is not as a cutesy movie as one might think, as New York is still portrayed as a serious place, with the loan shark character being very intimidating and having scary moments, and this extends to there being a good climax. The movie has well-done suspense in terms of how the loan will be resolved. I also like Dodger's more savvy personality, and Georgette has some funny moments in terms of how over-the-top she is, Winston the butler has a funny hobby too. This movie does have some problems, though. The animation does an okay job making New York City feel gritty and is not exactly awful but feels like it doesn't go above and beyond, and aside from the massive exception of Why Should I Worry, and to a much lesser extent the opening song, the songs feel like they could be more memorable. Maybe Georgette's song is okay, but I found Perfect Company and Streets of Gold to be quite forgettable. I also feel like the characters could have been fleshed out more, and had less hasty arcs, even the characters I did like. And that's not all the characters either, as I felt Tito to come across as just a Hispanic stereotype, in a way that's not abysmally but a bit offensive.

As for Despicable Me 4, a lot of why it fares mediocrely with me is just that I couldn't stand the '80s references the movie had. The third movie already was unfunny about making Balthazar Bratt's only traits that he is obsessed with the 80's as he was my least favorite element of it, so it is made worse here by that that type of humor overdone in the third movie already is used again here to such a large extent and even unfunnier. All of the jokes about the 80s in this movie feel like a forced formula of "if you reference this decade it automatically makes the movie more clever" and feel completely flat and unfunny, almost like they were written by AI. For example, just because Gru and the villain both have something in common regarding a 1980s song doesn't automatically give them interesting rivalry chemistry when that's the only thing the movie does to try to give them chemistry. Other flaws I felt the movie had was that the Minions were really underutilized in the climax and the humor is hit and miss in general, sometimes there are streaks of really funny jokes in a row but other times the humor is weak, although no other miss joke in the movie is anywhere near as bad as when the movie automatically thinks it is funny just because it references the 80s when that feels so overused. That one person
figures out Gru's identity to blackmail him when no one else figures out it's him
somehow could have been set up better too, because
since all she had to do was realize Gru's secret identity had his face, one would expect more people would realize it was Gru undercover looking at his face.
There were definitely things I liked about it though as it's not an outright bad movie, just an okay one. I actually liked the Minions here where I tended not to as much in previous movies, for example the scenes where they bully the pompous rich guy who's a jerk to Gru are funny and I thought the experiments with the superpowers were too even though they were underutilized, and I wasn't expecting my biggest flaw with their role to be that I wanted to see more of them by the end. There also is some good action like usual, such as that I really like the villain's cockroach powers a lot, and there's great action around that including some good emotion in the climax regarding them with a satisfying ending for Gru. It's too bad that in terms of as a character instead of as a force regarding being a villain, about his only personality trait in the movie whatsoever is "he liked a 1980s song and so did Gru". So the villain is very much a mixed bag. Also regarding the action scenes, I liked the parts where the person with blackmail on Gru works with him to get a certain mission they want accomplished, as those were fun and suspenseful, as they should be. It does feel like they have some chemistry with Gru when the villain does not at all. Some of the jokes are still funny too such as some of how the main characters have trouble fitting into the city. So yeah if you love Despicable Me maybe you'll like this movie, but while I like the series myself this movie was just okay, like the third.

The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea is an interesting case as unlike any of the four movies at all, I had actually covered what my thoughts were on it on the forum before, in the thread, "What Movies Have You Seen Recently", but I still will say what I thought about it here. The movie still has some positives, and there are still direct-to-video Disney sequels I distinctly found worse such as Mulan II and the three movies I covered in my list Bottom 5, but it is still the weakest of the five movies mentioned and I considered it to be while definitely not awful, not good in its own right. I did think Ursula's sister Morgana was a good villain still as while the writers have her be a bit less polished and with more of a jealousy complex so as to change the personality from Ursula, she still is a smart villain with calculating and intimidating moments and an interesting plan to manipulate Melody, even if Melody is a bit gullible here. I found her minion Undertow's running gag to be fun too. I also liked Melody okay, as she has enough spunk and one can sympathize with her desire to be free, especially considering how much Ariel is controlling to the point of
hiding information from her
. The more important characters in the first movie are mostly in character and written tastefully if not quite as interesting as they were there, although I felt Sebastian starts to become more mopey and morbid to the point of it grating later on, though written a bit better earlier in the movie. One thing I could add here is that I know some people don't find it well-written that Ariel and Eric
could have just told Melody about Morgana earlier instead of constantly trying to shield her from the ocean
, and retrospectively I'd say that is a bit of a flaw (originally when making that post that didn't factor in as much because I felt that sometimes parents can be simultaneously more obsessive-compulsive and less logical when in a protective phase.) However, I don't like Tip and Dash too much because they feel like the Timon and Pumbaa feeling of one spunky hyper-talkative character interacting with a less verbally eloquent character, even if they're a bit different because Tip's role as the former is more cranky than Timon's role as the spunky character. Scuttle also comes across as someone bumbling in a way that he just makes noises here instead of it being executed in an inventive or funny way like in the first movie. I guess at least while this movie isn't particularly funny mostly, no comedy in this movie is worse than "this movie has '80s references so it's automatically funny" from the previous movie I covered despite this movie still being weaker as a whole.

Moving on from the characters, I did think there was a passable amount of the atmosphere or heart in the first movie, with the former especially working okay when I watched it a year ago and about the oceanic/icy combination of atmosphere, as something about it helped that I watched it in the early morning around 2 AM, maybe the sense of calmness that that timeof night has going well with the atmosphere. The heart feels executed fine as well, as I did remember caring enough about the conflict and concern that both Ariel and Melody had regarding each other and how it would be resolved. The animation is a bit mediocre though, I like its colors but it feels choppy instead of smooth. I was pretty meh towards the soundtrack as well, as I thought "For A Moment" was a pretty good song, as it especially should be even more than other songs since it focuses on Melody, and it helps with the feeling of atmosphere the movie handles alright and one feels how Melody feels, but most of the other songs were forgettable at best. I also wish that sometimes it dialed back feeling similar to the first movie such as its plot of the kid wanting to go in a different realm but having overprotective parents feeling quite similar to the first movie, and retrospectively its climax being pretty similar to the climax of the first movie, as I originally gave that more positive marks although I still wouldn't say the climax is bad.

Kronk's New Groove is far too low
I remember still being okay with Kronk's New Groove and liking it more than any of the other DTV Disney sequels on the list (unless you count An Extremely Goofy Movie) as I liked some of the comedy and the idea of Kronk making unselfish decisions even at high costs to him and it paying off for him in the end, although I wished that Kronk's first story showed how he met Yzma, and I felt there could have been more funny jokes in the Birdwell story although that still had its interesting parts, plus I felt that Kronk not serving any meals for anyone because he's too busy telling his life story contradicted a bit with the theme of Kronk learning to be selfless (even though the waitress sarcastically encouraging him to tell it and he keeps going taking it literally is funny in and of itself).

I watched Kronk's New Groove when it first came out in 2005 on DVD when I was 12 and absolutely laughed my head off at it. And as an adult, I personally still find it really funny and when I re-watch it now, all those good childhood movies come flooding back. I have to say that as far as the humor, it's actually to me a lot funny than original Emperor's New Groove, but objectively the rest of the aspects of the first movie are better, a lot more depth. However, I still think this is at least a decent sequel, and if nothing else, it's good for a laugh, because there are a LOT of funny moments in this movie, and I think the whole thing of Kronk freaking out about trying to impress his dad is pretty funny too. So yeah, not a bad sequel. Probably better than Brother Bear 2 was although I enjoyed that.

Also did you know Patrick Warburton who voices Kronk also voiced Buzz Lightyear in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command instead of Tim Allen? Interesting.

@Will Solace Thank you very much indeed for taking the time to write your thoughts- before I proceed to read can I check if I'm good to do so if I haven't seen these films and am wanting to avoid spoilers for them?

This was a good question as I was writing to avoid major spoilers but realized that in my post, there were some spoilers earlier in the movie and/or twists that I kept vague but you would have realized them earlier in the movie before they are revealed, that people still might not want to already know before watching those movies, so I edited my post to reflect that such as adding spoiler boxes and other minor wording changes regarding those. You should be good to read them now.
