  • I really, really, really want to like Bowser's Inside Story. But it's so damn brutal it feels kind of unfair! Am I doing anything wrong or is the game really this hard and punishing when an enemy lays a single blow on you?

Is this the original Bowser's Inside Story or the 3DS remake you're playing?

Have you ever played any other Mario & Luigi games or Mario RPGs?

Bowser's Inside Story was my first Mario RPG other than SPM (which is a very easy game and does not have turn based combat), and I found it kind of hard as a kid but much more manageable as an adult (it's probably the easiest in the M&L series I'd say, other than maybe Superstar Saga DX). My advice would be:
    • Pay close attention to the patterns for enemy attacks and how to dodge them. Always be on your toes during your enemies' turn!
    • Fight every enemy you see, this may seem tedious and might not seem like much benefit in the short term, but over the course of a playthrough it can really add up and make a huge difference to how manageable combat is in the mid to late game. I used to flee most optional battles as a kid and that really came back to bite me in the late game.
    • Equip the best gear you have access to
    • Stock up on healing items (including HP and SP, and for both Bowser and the bros.) I like to stock up on tons of the cheapest ones so that I can always use those in between battles to fully heal up (if I don't have access to a healing shop such as Emoglobin's Special Juice, which are much more cost efficient than using items), and then have some more expensive ones to hand for in battle (because having more powerful healing items in battle saves you turn over using multiple weaker ones, but out of battle that is no issue). Also have some 1-ups to hand.
    • You can "grind" by going back and fighting weaker enemies to level up easier. Try to go for the strongest ones that you can handle, so that you're getting the most XP.
    • Take time to master Bros. Attacks in the practise mode so that you can reliably do good damage to foes.
    • Don't sleep on Badges! (that is, if you've unlocked them yet)
    • Make sure you always collect and use Beans whenever you see a Bean spot on the ground (if you've unlocked the ability to dig up Beans yet)
    • Try to explore secret areas if you can as not only are they often fun, but they can contain very valuable rewards.

Where I left off I was in the Tower of Yikk - I can't remember what level I'm at, but, based on responses I've gotten here and elsewhere, my run is probably all out of whack, LOL. To be fair, I did start it years ago when I was younger, got stuck on the first Durmite boss, and put it down for years. I think I've been underleveled since early game, because young me's mindset was to skip as many battles as possible, so I didn't think about buying gear or actually going back and getting XP to level up and become stronger.

Thanks for responding, and especially so for the comprehensive guide on a playthrough. I plan on restarting my run to get the most out of it (and to actually remember what happens in the early game! I will be having sandwich with mustard of remembrance!)

Dunno, it looks exactly what I'd imagine a Sticker Star prototype would look like, except they used some placeholder enemy graphics. The boss fight looks better than the ones we actually got but aside from that, I think they ditched the Chain Chomp partner because devs think it's pointless when you can just give its move to Mario instead.
Well, like they say in Brooklyn, early to bed, early to catch the worm! Or...is it the bagel?
