Why did they have to cancel Donkey Kong Racing?

They got canceled because Microsoft brought Rare in 2003, so they only released Star Fox Adventure after it.
 
Yeah, Donkey Kong Racing was a regrettable loss, but at least we got Barrel Blast. In my opinion, that was the next best thing.

See it as a random guess, as the XBOX came out in 2003, while Star Fox Adventures (and the Gamecube) came out in 2002.

It's kind of too late. Most of the more prominent programmers Rare had have left by now. They aren't worth nearly as much as they were before the buy.
