Yeah NSY it really is a good show. I think the Majority of Bronies were skeptical before they watched the show. Also UM that part of the article is only a part of it. Really the best thing for explaining how, when, and why it's so popular without having to read a long article is to see this video. Which thanks to Youtube embedding allowed here I can show right here.

I don't do fanon either. But I was looking for the pony Bonbon, to see why everyone liked her, and I found a pony that had derpy's color scheme, and so I gave him that nickname.
Dammit, I can't find the picture.
Anyways, I didn't kmow there was much pony fanon.
 
Oh trust me there is ALOT of Fanon. Pretty much every single Background Pony has been given a name by the fandom. And some Background ponies that were like only the center of attention for less then 5 seconds have entire fanfics made for them. I think Derpy and DJ PON3 are the most notable examples. Most of you already know about Derpy's story I believe. But DJ PON3 litterally appears for a whole 3 seconds in Suited for Success and she became the icon for Fanmade Remixes (Usually like Techno or any genre of Music that tends to have a beat) of songs in the show

I don't mind a bit of fanon if there's nothing canon. For example, I don't mind calling the brown horse with the hourglass cute mark "Doctor Whoof" or "Doctor Whooves". I sort of prefer Ditzy Doo to Derpy Hooves, although Lauren Faust has used the name Derpy Hooves, so I don't mind calling her that, either.

Also, I LOVE the name "Steven Magnet" for the sea serpent in the second episode! Other than fan nicknames, though, I'm not too keen on the other aspects of fanon.

Also, although I've never read the fan-fic, I find "Cupcakes" to be a bit overrated, no matter what's in it. The cute Pinkie Pie song, though, I love. Kind of reminds me of that Lazy Town song about backing cakes...
 
I like Spike's mustache. BTW Spike and his mustache form remind me of Edofenrir and his alter-ego Edonofer. :O.
