10 seasons i call it. Probably a reboot after that.

Today's episode was fun. Probably the funnest time I've had watching an Applejack related episode since The Last Round-Up. And the episode was leagues better then both Apple Family Reunion and Spike at your Service combined.

It was definitely a good episode. I thought it hit really well with comic relief and stuff. That cave scene just made me laugh a little too hard.

I think the highlight of this episode was the "Apple to the core" song and all the facial expressions that everyone made (but mostly Big Mac's face).

It was a good balance to this season, but not my favorite. Definitely not as bad as the apple-themed episodes last season.

Saw Pinkie Apple Pie! Hard to say what I thought of it. Pretty sure I liked it, even though I don't really like watching... Well, I'll get to that momentarily. I'll definitely say this, it was well-written, at least from what I saw, and there's nothing structurally wrong with it, so whether or not I like it comes down to personal preference. I mean, I definitely enjoyed it for the most part, but there are moments that didn't sit well with me, for entirely personal (and seemingly trite) reasons.

So, to start off, while I like Pinkie's faces, and the Jenga joke, what are the odds that the paper Pinkie pulled happens to have been the one that revealed her connection to the Apple family (sort of)? ...Also, what was Twilight doing with that, anyway? I mean, it would make sense to have information on her own family tree, but why the Apple's?

I should probably mention now that I never find Pinkie's antics "funny". I find them either cute or annoying. She teetered on annoying early on, and at the very end, but for the most part it was really cute and endearing, mostly because she provided a nice off-set to the Apple family, which I guess I should just get out of the way here and now.

I didn't like seeing the Apple Family argue. There's nothing wrong with it, it makes sense that a family would get on each other's nerves once in a while, and ESPECIALLY when you're under pressure trying to look good for someone else. I just didn't like having to watch it. The situations they argued about didn't even seem all that forced, either. Part of my brain was thinking "the Apple Family was never at each other's throats like this, this is a contradiction", but I hushed it, because all the circumstances seem completely reasonable for them to get irritated with each other. Although, I have to say, while it's clearly Big Mac's fault for not checking the wagon to make sure it could carry everything, and Apple Bloom's fault for messing around with the map, and Granny Smith's fault for getting her information wrong, I didn't like how everypony blamed Applejack (including herself) for the wheel getting broken off the raft. If was ALL of their fault for fighting over the wheel, and honestly, given how they kept messing things up, I feel AJ was in the right to take over. After all, Apple Bloom said earlier that she pretty much holds things together. Then again, like Rarity's outburst in last week's episode, you don't really think rationally when you're emotional, and the Apple Family are clearly getting more and more angry with the day they've been having. I DO like that everypony owned up to their actions and apologized, though.

What I liked even more was Pinkie's interactions with the Family. She's never a nuisance in this episode, like you would expect from most episodes where Pinkie's involved (I'm looking at you, A Friend in Deed). In fact, she's just unabashedly cheery throughout the whole ordeal, even watching the Apples getting angry with each other. I kind of knew Pinkie honestly wouldn't care less if the Apple Family wasn't perfect, and Hell, even if she did see them act like jerks, she's just so happy to be a part of her best friend's family! But even still, seeing that scene where Pinkie says they're the best family ever for staying together even after all that, and owning up to their mistakes... well, that was really heartwarming. In fact, I think I'd go as far as to say it's one of the most touching scenes I've seen this season. No really, I was really that moved by it! Hard to explain why, though...

Let's see, what else can I talk about...

The song... okay, this is, hands-down, the best song of season 4 so far. I loved it when I saw it from Comic-Con, and I love it now even more here! I literally just wanted to dance and sing along with them, it's just such a... I don't even want to say "catchy", it's just a great beat, or it has a great rhythm or I don't even know, it's just great! Hell, I originally thought Granny Smith's part was bad, but I surprisingly really liked it here! I mean, I don't know what else to say, I just love this song! ...Though I have to admit, that thing I thought was a gag at the end of the song turned out to be a major problem and the first cliffhanger of this episode was kind of funny.

That eagle grabbing the fish that grabbed the map was funny... That eagle grabbing the duck that caught the wheel was funny AND terrifying it, like I didn't expect that at all! It's weird that I was shocked by the duck being taken away but not the fish... mostly because I remember a similar-looking duck competing to be Rainbow Dash's pet in May the Best Pet Win!, and the eagle that grabbed it in this episode JUST SO HAPPENED to look like the eagle in that episode as well... Thankfully, the duck got away, and is seen flying with three other ducks moments later... still wearing the wheel. :P

When everypony's apologizing, and it's Big Mac's turn, I nearly flipped out, only to get angry when Granny Smith shut him up before he could say much of anything... I never understood the whole "Big Mac is the strong silent type". Yeah, if he was that, they gave him a terrible introduction then! Seriously, in the fourth episode of the entire series, Big Mac talked like any other normal pony, then immediately after that, he only said, like, one word at a time, and it felt really strange! If he had always been like that, I wouldn't be this bothered by it, but with his first appearance outside of the first episode, where he didn't have a line, where he didn't seem that different from any other pony, trying to keep the whole "non-talkative Big Mac" thing a running joke feels kind of moot. ...You know what I hope they do for season 5? They do that original episode idea Lauren Faust had, about Applejack, Granny Smith, and Apple Bloom being all talkative and pushy, causing Big Mac to run off and take a break from it all. THAT would be a great episode! DO IT, DHX!

At first I thought "Goldie Delicious" was "Golden Delicious", was previously established and completely different pony, but I'm glad to see that she is, indeed, a different pony... Curious, though, that she didn't turn out at (either of) the Apple Family Reunion(s), especially considering she has so many family heirlooms, as well as a complete history of the Apply family. EQUALLY curious that she doesn't seem to recognize her relatives, considering all that as well. The fact that she's a "crazy cat pony" is also kind of funny, especially considering what kinds of cats she has.

Also, apparently, she's voice by Peter New:

Okay then... I DID think she had a strangely masculine-sounding voice.

I get the feeling that the whole "gingerbread house was her lunch" was supposed to be the punchline to a joke that wasn't properly established. She mentions that the horseshoes that Applejack nearly tripped over belonged to somepony in the family, and that in storyboards, she was supposed to point out various stuff that belonged to different family members, before Apple Bloom pointed out the gingerbread house, and that it's hers. I think the joke would have worked better that way, since as it is, it doesn't really make that much sense and doesn't really work at all; they might as well just cut it all out if they couldn't properly fit it all in.

I also have to say I'm a bit annoyed that there JUST SO HAPPENS to be a smug in Goldie Delicious's book, just like on the scroll Pinkie had. It feels really contrived; I know they wanted to have it ambiguous, but really, why the same exact reason? Why couldn't they have it that the particular part was ripped out? I mean, there are loads of cats there, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the part that confirmed that Pinkie is related to the Apple family was torn out by one of her cats. Instead, the excuse they had feels incredibly lazy, they really could have done that bit better. What followed was pretty cliche, saying it doesn't matter, you're still enough of a family to us, etc. It didn't feel nearly as strong as the scene before Goldie Delicious arrived.

Reprise of Apples to the Core was wonderful! X3

The moral at the end was good, but the fact that the Apple family immediately started arguing over who should write the journal entry was stupid. It's like the mane 6 arguing at the drop of a hat in Hearth's Warming Eve, it just doesn't feel natural, which is a shame, because Natasha Levinger (another newbie writer) did a good job at making they Apple Family increasingly getting annoyed with each other feel natural in this episode. Here, arguing over who should write in the journal, it just comes out of nowhere. Besides, isn't this the mane 6's diary? Why should Apple Bloom, Big Mac, or Granny Smith write in it?!

And... NO FUCKING ENDING GAG! Thank goodness, I was seriously getting sick of those!

Well, that's what I thought of this episode... PRETTY sure I liked it, despite my... well, they aren't really nitpicks, I just don't like seeing those kinds of things in general. So good episode overall! So, what, this is, like, 9 episodes in, 2 I genuinely didn't care for, 2 I think are okay, and 5 I genuinely like? I feel like this really is turning out to be my favorite season so far, despite my past ramblings about the season.

ok i'm 5 minutes into today's episode

normally i don't like over-analyzing mlp but i have got to say

why has pinkie pie become so 1 dimensional? she's gone from my second favorite pony (rarity is still best pony) to least favorite pony. they TOTALLY let fan service get to their heads. pinkie pie has become a bumbling idiot.

maybe this episode will prove my wrong but it does not seem like the transition was fast. compare pinkie pie season 4 to season 1. or fuck, compare season 4 with season 3. she's changed so much and so drastically.

or no maybe i'm not describing it correctly. IDK how to explain it. her personality just seems so forced now.

I actually thought Pinkie was... slightly more tolerable in this this episode. Don't get me wrong, she definitely had her moments, but I tended to like her in this episode more then I was annoyed with her, which is saying a lot, considering that with most of her episodes, she tends to be the worst part of those episodes.

idk it seems to me like they're toning down a bit here because this is her episode and they have to write her a little better.

it's something i've noticed all season long. maybe i'm imagining it.

EDIT: omg the song just played. that was REALLY GOOD

It's weird that you call it "her" episode, since like I said, episodes that tend to focus on her seem to show her in a really bad light (A Friend in Deed comes to mind), plus this episode seems to focus more on the Apple Family then her specifically.

And yes, the song is REALLY good! As I said, it's my favorite of the season so far!

Well this is interesting. Slenderman had a cameo in the previous episode. And unlike the Gravity Falls fake, it actually is in the episode. Seriously, I have a download of the episode that rips it straight from the TV.

I actually haven't played Slender though I've seen some videos of it. But rather interesting to note nonetheless xD

Has discord made any more appearances in the show yet as fluttershy's wacky comedic sidekick

Discord is slated to appear in Episode 11. (He also appeared in the Opener)

"“Three’s a Crowd” — As Twilight Sparkle eagerly anticipates the arrival of Princess Cadance, Discord dishes up quite the dreadful disruption when he arrives and begs the ponies to take care of him while he is sick. But when Discord’s diva like demands get ridiculously out of hand, Twilight’s generosity and friendship skills are put to the test"

...oh my god, WHAT THE HELL?! Thanks for that GIF, BTW, I had a hard time seeing it until seeing that.

...BTW, I know that it's a week later, but everyone has to watch this "analysis" of Rarity Takes Manehatten:

In particular, pay attention from 10:57-12:20.

or maybe it's more of the foreshadowing that the writers keep putting in

Nah I think this was just a background cameo xP

The only foreshadowing thing that will lead up to something we've had other then the end of opener is the Rainbow thread from Rarity Takes Manehatten. While I'd like Fluttershy's fang from Bats! to be relevant in the future, I'm not confident in that leading to something.

Some storyboard artist had a sick sense of humor, and played all the blissfully ignorant guys running the show for fools...

Then again, I can't blame Meghan or Mike, seeing as I didn't know about the Slenderman until I saw this video:

And ever since then, I could never find the Slenderman all that scary.
