It depends on what country you go.
If it's an European country that's part of the EU, nothing is required.
If it's an European country that's not part of the EU, ID Card is required to enter.
If you go outside of Europe (North-America, South-America, Africa, Asia*, or Oceania**), you need to have a passport.

* = With an exception to Turkey.
** = Oceania means Australia and New Zealand.

To give you a nice example of the Dutch/Flemish border where I'm a lot on:

The blue boards and the pink road are the Dutch part, while the yellow board, the board with the huge "B" on it, and the gray road are the Belgian part.

Otherwise, there would be countries in countries.

Countryception!
I live in Vancouver, which is in B.C., which is in Canada.
Country inside a country inside a country.
Where I lived before it was like 45 minutes to the border, but In Vancouver it's usually an hour and a bit by car, because of the traffic. It would be like 30 minutes with no traffic.

Not trying to sound smartsy, but yes I do, and it's near the Pacific Ocean. Otherwise, the closes country border for me is Baja California, and yes, I actually visited there once.

Here is a summary of Canada
The red represents where 90% of us live.
The purple is hipsters.

I don't see anything but white on your image, Quizmo.

^Same for me as well.

Anyways, I live in Toronto (Canada). I'm actually about an hour or two away from the border to the United States. My family and I visit America sometimes, but it is mostly during the holidays.

But what if that was my image?
Everything is covered up by crappy snowstorms.
