Mario Kart is canon, but the wi-fi is a player functionality. I never use "character" in [mwiki]Mario Kart DS#Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Mode[/mwiki] except for when the player or racer chooses it. That section takes care of all we need to say about it on the wiki.
