Actually the staff don't let fans know about Mario characters, do they?
I can't answer where's BowserJr's mother or where's Mario bros' hometown.

That a major boss in SMB2 USA. Are you sure he's not well known? You'd think a character like Little T would not be well known to the non-hardcore mainstream, but Triclyde???

Well, not that nobody else knows about them, but not many people can recall Kylie Koopa on a whim. I love her attitude.
 
Rosalina. She's not very popular for those who don't play recent Mario games regularly. It's not like, I don't know, Wario, that even non-gamers recognize when they see him.

And Dimentio > Fawful IMO.
 
I like Fawful and Dimentio in diffrent ways.

I will have to agree with you on Rosalina despite she is quite popular here.
