I lied, I think I'm going to indulge myself quickly.
Okay what happened was that the pagans had themselves a winter solstice holiday, so the church moved the day that they usually celebrated the birth of Christ around the same time as the pagan holiday for theological and political reasons.
You must understand that the pope was just as much a politician as he was a leader of the church back then.
If you want more information, I'm sure someone would be happy to elaborate.
