You mean that the coins you collect are combined? I don't see why it wouldn't. Did it not do it in MK7? I never really played local multiplayer in that game.

No, it didn't. Coin counts are individual, not collective.

How I envision it:

Gold Kart: Complete all cups with karts
Gold Bike: Complete all cups with bikes
Gold ATV: Complete all cups with ATVs
Gold Wheels: 3 stars on all cups
Gold Glider: 1 star on all cups

Each cup could display an icon showing if you completed it with a kart, bike, or ATV.
